Excellent point, JohnK, and one I overlooked. When DVDs contain a "setup" function, indeed, you often need to enable Dolby Digital 5.1. I've also found that the audio setup on the DVD may be grouped with the "subtitles" heading. Some recent DVDs (case in point: past season discs of "Breaking Bad") seem not to bother with any audio setup function and default to Dolby Digital 5.1. -- Alan

Some DVDs come with both a 5.1 and a 2.1 stereo soundtrack, and are set to play 2.1 by default. It's a good idea to check the 'audio setup' option from a movie's main menu before pressing 'play', to make sure 5.1 is enabled.
