I enjoyed Pillars of the Earth very much. If you do too, there is a year-old followup novel called World Without End . Ken Follett's web site refers to it as a sequel, but it's not really a continuation because it takes place 200 years after "Pillars." However, it does involve the cathedral and city of Knightsbridge and the offspring of some of the characters in "Pillars."

Another interesting and offbeat series of novels you might consider is the Egyptian Series by Wilbur Smith comprising River God, The Seventh Scroll, Warlock, and The Quest. If anyone had told me, before I read them, that I would enjoy novels with an Egyptian eunuch as the hero, I would have thought them nuts.
