You have to pick out the heavy limes with thin, light coloured skins. They normally give between 1.5 and 2 oz when selection is good.

Average limes seem to give more like an ounce, and I've had some that didn't even have 1/2 oz. That 4:1 variation sure makes it hard to get a consistent taste. When I'm mixing drinks for guests I usually measure the amount of juice before mixing and either scale the other ingredients or cut up another lime.

Lemons are much more consistent, for some reason, and work surprisingly well in margaritas as long as nobody sees you mixing their drink.
