"both balanced and unbalanced circuits" means they have two completely independant circuit boards. One takes balanced input, they other takes unbalanced input. They do not cross paths.

But they have to meet up somewhere (usually at the pre-amp stage) unless it is a completely differential amp with one side doing the push and the other the pull. No one but the esoteric companies does that.
