I always think it quite odd that combing effects are brought up today, when most home theater setups consist of 5 or more speakers positioned all around the listener, all of which reproduce the full spectrum of frequencies, more or less. As you stated, the only way to truly rid yourself of the combing effect is to have a single speaker with a single driver for that frequency. Nobody would want to listen to that.
