Because the amp was seeing an 2 Ohm load, this would cause current to flow very easily. While that does increase the power output of an amp, it can increase it beyond spec. An amp pushed beyond its design limits will have a higher THD, this comes from the output stage not being able to handle that much current. Distortion can also come from clipping if the transformer can't provide enough power, and sags under the demand. Even without clipping an over taxed power supply will cause dynamic range compression, and lower output levels.
