I'm wondering about the easiest, most cost effective way, to attach wireless(or regular) headphones to a T.V. The T.V. has your standard hookups in the back. It does have an audio out on the back of the T.V.

Do I need an amp/reciever to do this?
Is there a device I can hook to the audio out that will support headphones?

Thank you all in advance for any input you might have!

Aaron

Alright! Another member for the M40 posse! Woohoo. . .um. . .wait. . .there is no M40 posse.

I had an older Panasonic tv that had a headphone plug on the front. Without one I suppose you need a receiver.

Or a headphone amp! In any case, you need an amplifier for the headphones in any case.

Actually the number is going down. I'm shipping the M40s tomorrow.
They were bought as a gift but i took the time to listen to them, be sure they checked out of course.
Until we move in a couple of months, i wouldn't even have a place to put them.

That does it, Chess! You are officially out of the group. No more yearly newletters from us.

As for your "separation fee" you can send me your M60s. . .or your Tannoys. I'll let you decide.

I'll be waiting for the UPS truck.

Actually St Pat, i somehow don't think you were.

The Tannoys are lovely but i've never heard any of the new 'style' that i've liked nearly as much as those with the classic dual concentric driver. The only more inexpensive Tannoy model that has this now is the Sensys DC2. It is really too bad. Their Saturn model i thought was a very good buy and their Definition series which sold for 11 years had 'levels' right from 1k for the D300 up to 7k for the D900 model.
Now it seems to get that classic driver config you need to be putting out some serious cash for either the Dimension or Prestige models.

Wait, what's driving your M40s? Does that have a headphone jack?

I guess if you want to kill two birds with one stone (well, a stone plus a power supply for the stone plus a headphone jack wired up to the outputs of the stone plus a volume control...) you could pick up one of those T-amps for cheap. You could use it during the week as a headphone amp then play with it as a stereo music amp on the weekends. Everyone says the T-amps sound fantastic with M3s, so M40s should be even better -- a bit more efficient plus buckets of bass.

Whoa, those things look like they're built like tanks! My first impression of the Prestige series is that they are clunky and unappealing. Hmm, but I've stared at them for a while now, and my impressions have changed. They definitely have a unique look, not the slim HT friendly speakers so common out there. There is a certain elegance, a furniture style quality to these speakers. They need to be pretty wide, though, to handle the large diameter of the dual concentric drivers. Pricey indeed.

AG08,
Did you have a budget in mind for a headphone amp? Or perhaps a receiver or integrated amp with a headphone jack?

I should of giving back groud info. The 40's are mine. The headphones are for my Grandmother, who is cuurently living with my parents after hip surgery. My Grandmother can't hear the T.V. unless it is turned up very loud, very loud. I'm visiting my parents, in San Antonio, and the T.V.is driving me and my parents crazy! My solution is headphones for Grandma! My parents stereo is not contected to their T.V.(it never will be!)

Budget would be as cheap as possible. I know I could buy an amp and make it all work. I was just hoping for an alternative solution.

Thanks

Hi AG08,

I have the answer for your Grandmother. Get a pair of AR (Acoustic Research) Model AW721 900MHz Wireless Stereo Headphones. They will accept any line-level audio output (from a TV, portable CD player, whatever) and are supplied with a couple of adaptors to fit RCA jacks, headphone mini jacks and the like.

A wall-wart supplies the headphone transmitter/charger base, which recharges the NiMH batteries (included) for the headphones when not in use. The sound is quite good, certainly fine for your Grandmother, with adjustable volume at the headphone, tuning indicator light (for the 900 MHz signal) and other useful controls.

I think they sell for less than $100 but you will have to check. Full disclosure: these AR phones were given to me at an AR accessory press event. But I've tried them and they have very good performance for the money and are reasonably resistant to interference. Ideal for your application.

Regards,

Alan to the rescue! I was just starting to do some research, not thinking I'd have much luck in the budget dept. Those AR cans sound like a good solution. AG08 and his grandmother should be happy.
