OK, so I've always used DVD+R's with great success in my computer DVD players, but have had some problems with my newest DVD HT player the Panasonic S97S. The manual says DVD-R's only, however, I know many people on AVS that have had no problems with DVD+R's.

I purchased a new software program from Best Buy called ICopyDVDs2. I use this to make backup copies of DVD's I own, as my children have from time to time broken original DVD's of some of my movies. Anyway, I used to use DVD Decryptor and DVDShrink which are freeware, however, development of these ended years ago.

I called the software company and they said it is unlikely it is their product and most likely the media and/or the player having problems with the media.

So, I am wondering if I should be looking for another brand, and go with DVD-R this time? These DVD's play fine in my computers DVD players, so there is nothing wrong with them.

I've heard others have had good luck with Ritek? I think they cost more than memorex/phillips/etc...

I've never had a problem with TDK media. I've used both + and -R in my burner, and both have worked in DVD players, although not 100% which you have to expect. BTW DVD +/-R +RW -RW DVD-RAM etc WTF? I hope one of the new formats CRUSHES the other so we don't have to go through this crap again.

I was considering the same panasonic DVD player. I noticed the stipulation on supporting only DVD-R media types and wondered about it.

Generaly players can play both DVD -R and +R. For whatever reason this player seems to not support the +R.

You mentioned some problems.... Have any of your +Rs worked in this player???

I have had good luck with the -R TDKs

By the way I still use DVD Decryptor and DVDShrink is the software you bought alot better??

Yes, I have had luck with DVD+R's on this player. I sometimes use DVDShrink as well in combination with Decryptor. If I don't use compression, or span across more than 1 DVD+R, they work fine. Although there have been a few DVD's neither of them can complete for whatever reason once getting to about 50%. I don't know if it is the dvd player in combination with compression or what is causing the freezing. They play fine in my computer DVD player, so I assume it is the player and/or cheap brand's of DVD+R's.

The same movies freeze in my cheap Cyberhome DVD player, but not as much, I assume it is because it claims to support DVD+R's.

The software I bought has a very easy interface and the user does not have to configure many settings, it was like $40 bucks though.

Also, my burner is an older Sony 2X so that may be part of the problem. XP likes to go into logoff mode frequently, so maybe that is the problem, however, again they play fine in my computer.

I suppose I'll try some -R disks to see what happens..

If you are looking to replace your burner I have had great luck with benq drives. I have yet to make a coaster....
(as I knock on wood)
These drives are oemed to so various off brands may indeed be a benq.
