My brother is moving from Boston out here to LA. He's got a bunch of older gear that he wants to get rid of, and I'm going to put together a brand new top to bottom HT setup for him when he gets here in LA.

I'm going to try and get him set up with some Axiom speakers. But first I need to try and help him get rid of what he's got. He doesn't want to bother shipping it, as it's older stuff.

It would be really great stuff for a first time system, or a basement/gameroom set up. Boston, MA pick up only - he won't be bothered to pack and ship it...first $175 takes it ALL!

Boston Acoustics CR-9 speakers (great little bookshelf speakers...consider the $175 is for these, and the rest is thrown in FREE)

Yamaha RX-485 receiver
Sony TC-WR445 dual cassette deck (remember these?)
Sony CDP-C325 5 disc cd changer
Mitsubishi HS-U100 VHS deck

Let me know if you are interested...pretty good deal for all that stuff.

I think I'm going to be able to talk him into the Epic Grand Master system.

Ah yes. This phenomenon is known as "upgrade displacement." When you can't quite justify a system upgrade of your own, get your friends to do it!

What do you think about this?

He's provided a budget of about $2500-$3000. I need everything - all 5 speakers, subwoofer, dvd/cd player and receiver. (The TV will be a separate issue all together)

This will be in a smallish room.

Here's my first thought, I'd love to hear yours.

Axiom Audio M22ti mains $400
Axiom Audio VP150 center $350
Axiom Audio QS4 surrounds $310
Hsu VTF-2 subwoofer $450

Denon DVD-2900 $1000
Denon 2803 receiver $800

I know I've gone over budget...can you all help with that?

i think a good place to cut some of the cost would be that 1000 dollar dvd player, and have money left over to upgrade to the qs8 instead of the fours and still stay within his budget...just an idea......good luck-ron

I would say get a cheaper dvd player.
That Denon is way too expensive.

You can probably still find some of the highly profiled Panny rp82 on ebay for cheaper.

yeah...I know that 2900 is pricey. Anyone have suggestions for a better uni-player?

The Pioneer Elite DV-45A is a universal player for under $400. I doubt if it's *better*, but I'm sure it's a better value.

You should be able to save a little with a different receiver, like the HK AVR-525 or the Sony STR-DA4ES.

Yes, if all he needs is a plain-vanilla high-quality DVD player, follow the suggestions of this site. For example, Panasonic DVD-XP30 is one of the highest-scored models, and it is mere US$300 MSRP. I strongly doubt that the Denon 2900 performs appreciably better than the XP30.

[added in edit]

He can buy the Pioneer Elite 45TX now for less than $800. The 45TX is a competitor of the Denon 3803, one step up from the current plan. IMO, the MCACC alone is worth it -- it is no gimmick.
