I'm sure you guys are sick of these questions but I have received my vp150 to go with my m60, qs8 and velodyne sub.

Currently I have the onkyo receiver tx-600 set to large L/R, small centre/surrounds. Should I now set the centre speaker to large?

I would recommend setting everything to small -- even with the m60's.

The center should definately be set to small.

I think most of the people here set all their speakers to small. Someone will chime in and give you the technical reasons.

All small. Crossover 80.

My mains are in cabinets, yuck,and consequently I have virtually NO room reinforcement in the bass region.

I set my mains to large, which enables me to set my Onkyo 602 "double bass" to "on"

This sends part of the mains lower frequencies to the sub, helping to round out what the mains aren't able to produce in their confining locations.

It takes a bit of a balancing act to get to work right, but it can work very well!

I would also recommend setting all speakers to small, with a receiver crossover at 80hz. On the sub you want to turn the crossover all the way to maximum so it does not interfere with the AVR's management, or if it has a bypass switch, that will work.

Also, make sure you calibrate your speakers with pink noise tone tests with an SPL meter if you have one...

Nhan, the idea of having a receiver with good bass management and using a separate sub is that the sub can handle the lowest bass frequencies even better than a speaker(such as the M60s)which has good bass. In addition, it can be positioned(e.g. the corner)for better bass than the mains. This isn't "wasting" the mains or other speakers, but rather allowing the sub to handle what it does best while taking part of the bass load off of the other speakers(and the receiver amps driving them). Generally all speakers should be set "small" and the 80Hz crossover has been found to be a good compromise, being high enough to take a significant part of the bass load while not being so high as to make the sub easily localizable.

Sorry guys I know its not The best way but my mains and my center are all in a Entertainment cabinet built specifically to hold the m-60's and 150 center channel. It all sounds great to me. Should I be changing my setup to compensate for the axioms in cabinets? If so what do I change. Big/small, crossover etc?
I like the sound but wanted your opinion on what you would try.

I don't think it makes a lot of difference since the "boxy" sound from having speakers in a cabinet is more likely to be at slightly higher frequencies -- maybe 300 to 1000 Hz.

Just a minute....

M60s are about 3 feet tall, for round-trip distance of 6 feet...

Speed of sound is 1130 feet per second, so 6 feet corresponds to about 1130/6 = 190 Hz. Should be a peak around 180-190 Hz (1 wavelength), a dip around 90-95 Hz (roundtrip = 1/2 wavelength)...

... plus lots of dips and bumps at higher frequencies controlled by the width of the M60 openings and size of the VP150 openings etc...

Only issue I see is that if you do end up with a dip in the 90 Hz range on either M60 or VP150 (is the VP150 opening about the same size as the M60 opening ?) you could lessen it by moving the crossover freq up to 100 Hz or so.

I would start at 80 like everyone recommends, though...
