When I say "name brand" DVDs, to me even Memorex is "name brand" compared to my last buy of "Staples" branded cheap-o-discs. Now I had a "coaster factory" when I was using those.

I really like the S97, but I too have longed for a good HTPC. If you ever get around to investigating it further, as to actual parts and costs, let me know. Maybe we could "bundle buy" something and each get one and possibly save a few bucks along the way. I like that a properly configured HTPC will read all disc formats, can save movies to disc (or that Lime Technology disk array... ), and you should be able to get REALLY good quality video out of it. For me, MP3 playback, viewing photos, and other parts aren't too important...

Not sure if this was mentioned but have you tried flashing the player with the latest firmware update? A lot times, manufacturers can add additional functionality with a quick update.

For example, I have an Oppo DVD player but the first dual layer disc I burned wouldn't work at all! WTF, my old Philips DVP642 works just perfect with DL. Anyways I grabbed the latest firmware update and voila, everything worked.

Try patching your player...
