Well after 2 hours I got it working good enough to start enjoying my new speakers again. But boy does the manual ever suck for this thing! I got thru the auto setup and then the DVD & radio OK. But it took me forever to figure out how to get the video/sound for the DirecTV satellite to work. And I'm still not sure if I have it right or not. Well at least it's working and now I can fine tune it as I learn what I'm doing. It's a nice receiver and I like the way it sounds so far. Thanks!

You are experiencing one of the "issues" with running your video through your audio receiver. I have posted, many times, let your audio gear do audio things and let your video gear do video things.

Most of the newer TVs, especially the HDTVs, have multiple inputs so switching should not be an issue.

Congrats on your new receiver, I know what your talking about with the Denon confusion on operation and manual. Anyway, I think I finally have my 2805 figured out.

Yeah, if you don't mind pushing 13 buttons on 5 remotes to watch a DVD...

The best $160 I've spent in a long time. Satellite, DVD, Xbox 360, CD all with the push of one button. Setup couldn't be simpler. Connect to USB port, enter your equipment part numbers online and your set.

The only tweak I had to make was setting the tivo not to power off when I switched activities or shut down the TV.

Hmmm - no one has mentioned the MX-850 yet, so I will.

Remote Central has an MX file that has every Denon receiver command (including individual + and- volume controls for each speaker and the sub). It's lke a candy store.

With the powerful macro capability, one button for virtually everything is available. You can do it all on the PC.

Check Surf Remote Control for open-box pricing. It's a great remote.

I think the programmable remotes are only ood to a certain point unless ALL of your equipment is compatible. I have a Samsung DLP that doesn't have dicete on/off and a polk XM tuner that won't allow the same key to be hit twice in a row on my remote (it's remote works fine).

Because of issues such as this, I STILL haven't bothered programming any macros....

The Harmony's can be setup about any way you want, for devices that are not in their huge inventory on the internet they can be trained just like most remotes for whatever functions you want. I have 3 of their remotes, all used in rooms without compatible equipment and they all work great.

Thanks everyone!

Ratpack, I think that's a good idea and I did bypass the receiver (video only) for my DirecTV. But not for the the DVD. I don't remember for sure now, but it seems like I didn't have enough inputs to do both. I'll check it out next time I have to pull it out and see. Thanks for the tip!

I'll have to check out one of those remotes, man that could save me a bunch of room and a bundle on batteries! lol

Well I'm really starting to love my new speakers and receiver now that everything is working right. It sounds great and I couldn't be happier!

HomeDad,

Whaddyamean, no batteries? Does it have a crank? Or do you shake it vigorously? Update me, please.

The 880 sits in a cradle to charge internal battery.

Lol Doug's got it right, The 880 sits in a cradle recharger, no more pesky batteries weakening the signal, and now I can find the remote because the wife actually puts it back in the cradle

I think Alan was being funny. Given that fact that the Harmony 880 "technically does run on batteries". Just a rechargable one instead of disposable.

It is a funny thought though to think of an 880 with a good ole' fashioned crank on the side!

The crank or wind-up remote is not a bad idea. You only use it for a few seconds at a time.

Somebody jump on this idea and invent one!

Led screen, and the 880 lights up when moved. Now I don't have to wear my glasses to find the light button.

Kcarlile,

I've always liked those crank flashlights since I was a kid. Some years ago I reviewed an emergency wind-up radio that would play for about 20 minutes after you turned the crank 50 times. I don't recall the brand. I've still got it. I think a later model added a solar panel on top.

Hey, a remote with a small solar recharger panel--I'll go to the drawing board.

I've got one of those little crank-dynamo powered radios with a solar panel on top. Neat little thing.

Does the 880 know the discrete codes to switch to the correct video input? In other words dies it know the difference between video1, video2, video3, etc? One B&M was trying to sell me a $450 pronto remote. When I asked about the Haromony he said he did not know much about them but thought they did not have the discrete codes for each input. Instead you would have to toggle thru each of them.

Need to keep it simple for the wife to keep the finances coming for future equipment.

The 880 will know the codes for your video inputs, one button turns on everything and sets all the devices to the desired mode.
