I am trying to decide between an EP 500 and an EP 600, but I have some questions/concerns about placement in my particular situation.

I have a "media niche" (the builder's phrase, not mine) that is being converted. It is essentially a large shelf or "pony wall" that is 22.5 inches high that runs most of the width of my family room. I'm having a false front, drawers, etc. put in/on it so that I can utilize the space within the area.

If possible, I would like to place the subwoofer within this space, behind a piece of what is essentially grill cloth. My question(s) is four-fold:

1). Provided I can work with the subs settings, move it left or right, etc., will the sub's performance be compromised by being installed "in cabinet" style?

2). Will the Axiom subs shake the snot out of my TV (and other components) that sits on top of this cabinet/shelf to the point that my video will be compromised?

3). If so, is there something I can do to cut down on the vibration without messing up the bass?

4). Is the EP 600 going to be overkill and/or worth the price difference over the EP 500 in a 17' x 17' room that is open on one side to the kitchen?

As far as the other speakers are concerned, I am getting the Epic 60 home theater package.

Thanks,

Dave

Well brother, any time you put a speaker inclosure inside another inclosure you are going to have problems.. You will totally destroy all the hard work the engineers put into designing the speaker.. Subs are no different..
Speakers come already packed in boxes, so you don't have to :-)
Many people still put book shelf models inside fancy cabinets that surround t/v's, and while they get away with it from a 'looks good' stand point, they are really killing the over all quality and abilities of that speaker..
The less you have right next to a speaker, the better..
Best bet to find a location for the sub is to put the sub where you plan to sit, and then walk around the room until you find the sound you like.. This means getting down on your hands and knees.. Mark that place, then put the sub on top of the mark.. The two locations and completely interchangable.. When you sit where the sub was, it will sound the same as it did when you were on your knees..
Some things in life are just too easy, eh..
Oh, as for buying the sub itself.. Go for as big as you can either afford, or find room for.. It's always easier to turn something down, than it is to turn it up..

LFE ! The rest is just details..

I would not recommend you placing the sub within any type of enclosure. My room is much much bigger than yours, and the EP500 is awesome. I'm guessing you will get some vibration and the framing nails will fall out. The EP500/600 are not just about vibration, they are very musical, if setup properly they will give you great/tight accurate bass, and also make the hair on your legs stand up during movies.

Not sure about putting a sub in a cabinet but seems like others are correct... it would defeat the design...

But I can comment upon the 600...

I think it would shake to other componets to pieces (I m sure to 500 would as well) ... in turn probably causing skips on DVDs and it couldnt be good for a tv...

If a compromise must be reached, put the sub elsewhere as mentioned above.

There is no such thing as overkill
