The way my basement is set up, one half is the bar/pool table room, the other half is the HT section. The room is 15 x 45 approx.
When you come down the stairs, you enter basically right in the middle of the room and the cheap little Yammie speakers I have mounted to the drop ceiling (8' high) with brackets is high enough to easily walk under (I'm 6'2") but are directly in line with the stairs and also right over the walkway to the washroom and laundry.
I am upgrading the system altogether from the "HT in a box" speaker system and plan to basically go with Axioms for all the speakers, except the back 2, as their QS8 surrounds have to be 12" from ceiling, that would be entertaining to watch people walk into...but you see the possible issues

My 2 choices are
1) find some really nice small speakers that can be either mounted to the ceiling, or in the ceiling itself.
or,
2) buy the QS8's and put them on stands.

For option 2, I would have to keep the speakers along the walls, then when we watch a movie, I would have to move them ito their proper positions, as they would be right in the throughway.
This brings up the next question that if I did use the stands, would the fact that the side surrounds are wall mounted 6 1/2 feet off the floor and the rear surrounds on stands work ok?

Thanks
Derek

You can mount Q8s on ceiling mounts with very little difficulty or expense.

I don't believe the Q's have to be that far down from the ceiling. I "think" they only have to be about 2" - 3". You might want to give Axiom a ring. - if you do, please post back to what they tell you. I'm in the same boat as you and plan on mounting them 3" down.

I think Mike is right. I think the best approach would be to wall-mount the QS8's 4-6" from the ceiling; that would give them enough room to operate and also ensure that all but the very tallest of your friends don't inadvertently conk their noggins.

I just measured the height and the ceiling is only 7' 2"
The issue is then that if I leave it even 4" off the ceiling and the speaker is 8" high, people will hit their heads on them. At least i will

I unfortunately feel that they won't work, believe me I wish they would.

Is the stands still an option with the side surronds wall mounted? Or can anybody recommend an small alternitave speaker that sounds good

Thanks again everyone.

I picture sure would help. I’m having trouble visualizing your dilemma.

The Q’s are pretty damn forgiving. They don’t have to be positioned ‘exactly' where you think they need to be. I mean, a little to rear, a little to the front, a little to east or west……It just doesn’t matter that much. I’ve got mine in an ‘all kind of weird and unacceptable manor’ and they do exactly what they are supposed to do. They certainly don’t sound as if they aren’t in the right spot. You may be able to mount them out of your traffic path without issue.

I don’t think you will get much relief from the other bookshelves as they are all as tall or taller than the QS 8’s. The QS 4’s are a tad shorter, but not by much.

Can you post a picture?

Well, I guess it comes down to this, the ceiling is too low to mount anything but a small speaker, the current speakers are yamaha's and they are about 8-10" L x 3" wide and are mounted on brackets sideways so they only hang down about 6" from the ceiling.

They have to be non obtrusive and not hang down too far. The area that they will be hung is a busy through way, and they can't go back any farther, and if I move them forward they will be too far forward (IMO)

Is there any problem having the side surrounds wall mounted, and the rear surrounds on stands that can be moved in and out of position, which means the rears will be a couple feet lower than the sides?

Also bearing in mind that I have a wife that doesn't want these "big, ugly" speakers hanging right in the way.

I realize this is an A
