This might be a stupid question, but would it be possible to have the light maple cabinets of a M80 painted to say, Black ? I would have it done by a professional ie: spray booth etc..Just not sure if is it even possible to do it in a way that would look like an original pair of Black Oak speakers.

This question has been asked before. If you use the search tool, and search the subject line for "paint" for the past few years, there are 2-3 threads on this subject.

Did the search...did not come up with an answer. The other thread basically pointed to the custom shop to get the user what he was looking for, a HG Piano finish. But it never answered the question if the finish can be painted or not. I am just looking to make an extremely light, almost white, speaker the colour of Black. There is a pair of M80s for sale in my area for a good price, just don't like the almost white finish of the light maple so I wanted to know if it was possible to somehow paint them or something.

As long as you took out all of the drivers and tweeters beforehand, I don't think it would be a problem.

No idea how it would look, though.

I googled this:

Can I paint vinyl?
Vinyl is a non-porous material; therefore, paint doesn’t adhere to it well. Only epoxy-based paint will stick to vinyl over an extended period of time. But paint can damage the vinyl’s surface. end of google.

Applying new vinyl in the colour of your choice sounds possible. Parts Express has some but it may not be in the sizes you need.

OR you could apply veneer over the vinyl and finish them as you desire.

Other than the veneer I think anything else would look "tacky". You could be spending a lot of money and a lot of time just to end up with speakers that look sad.

I think I'd go factory outlet with the colour you want.

Thanks Wayne, I think you are right, painting over the vinyl would end up "tacky". I either have to live with the light maple colour and save $700 CA or buy a pair from factory outlet.

Cheers,

Stephane

Not sure where you got $700 difference between these speakers and factory outlet ones (if you're referring to the same ones you were talking about in another thread for $950). A pair from the factory outlet can be had for $1314 CDN (+ tax), which is more like $400 difference. If you could actually get $700 off, I'd say go for it since that's about 50% off. If its $400 difference, then that depends how important color is to you.

Riker, I would definitely think twice about painting it. Hold off until you get the color you want. I know it's tough with such a great deal, but it's something you're going to look at everyday and you don't want any kind of remorse.

It's like buying a car in the color you don't want just because the dealer knocked some money off. You're going to be kicking yourself every morning when you go to work in your pea-green paint scheme.

When you pay a substantial amount of money for anything you should get what you want, even if it means waiting a bit longer.

Correct, my mistake, it is a $400 dollar difference with factory outlets.
