I just purchased the Samsung 42" DLP and the Toshiba SD6980 DVD player. The SD6980 is an upconvert HDMI DVD player but also plays DVD-A and SACD (have been dying to get Pink Floyd's DSOTM on SACD). I already have an HK 235 reciever. Anyway, my question is as follows...
1. I've read that DVD-A and SACD will not play through a digital connection to my reciever (fiber or coax) but instead i will need to use an RCA cable (1 for each channel). I was hoping that I could connect this way to my reciever but also connect HDMI from DVD player to TV and then fiber from TV to reciever. When i play DVD-A or SACD the sound will go from my 5.1 jacks and when i play DVD movie the path will flow through HDMI and down to reviever via fiber. Am i way off?

You need to use the 6, 7, or 8 analog RCA connections. With 2 (sufficiently expensive) Denons, you could use the digital DenonLINK, or with (very expensive) other equipment, you can use FireWire links. HDMI ain't gonna cut it.

you need the 5.1 channel connection from the dvd to the reciever using regular RCA patch cables to utilize sacd and dvd-a

You also need to use either digital coax or toslink (i like coax much better) for digital sound off the dvd's this will go from your dvdp to the reciever

You also need either component video or HDMI for video. you can either use the reciever for video switching or connect these directly to the tv

Ok, I think that answers my question then. Depending on what media source (dvd,cd, DVD-A, SACD, etc...) in my DVD player, my dvd player will be smart enough to know which audio outs to channel the sound through.

My TV, i believe, has a digital audio out so i think i can run HDMI directly from my DVD player to the TV and then use fiber to run from TV to reciever. I'm only doing it this way because my reciever has no HDMI ports.

your dvd player will output sound on the analog outputs and digital at the same time. You need to change that in your reciever depending on what source you want. Personally I would hook it up the way i explained in the first post rather than go HDMI to the tv then optical from the tv to the reciever. But if it works do whatever you like

It might be the only way though because I dont know if you will be able to output digital audio on HDMI and toslink/coax on the dvdp

Haoleb, thanks for the input. My DVD player comes with an HDMI cable and I already have a component video cable and several fiber cabels so I should have everything i need to experiment! With Thanksgiving coming up I'll have some time to fool around and see what works best or works period.
