hello all -

recently bought a VP100 to complete my 5.1 setup. have m22s as fronts, HSU subwoofer and old cambridge audio speakers as rears. driving all this is a yamaha rx-v2500 receiver.

my first reaction to the vp100 was that everything sounded very muffled. dialogue was strained and sound stage was absent. this is running dolby prologic II movie mode with 5.1 source (DVDs). other surround modes to not sound any better.

I did run the speakers through yamaha's automatic setup utility (YAPQ?): vp100 is small, m22 and cambridge speakers are large. subwoofer crossover is 160. distance and level seem appropriate. wiring checked out. I have checked to make sure both drivers are not loose. I have also played around with the receiver setting (setting all speakers to small, setting subwoofer crossover to 80) without any difference in sound.

one thing I noticed during yamaha's automatic setup - the utility sends out a sound tone which is detected by a microphone. when the test tone was sent to vp100, is sounded distinctly different that through m22. is this normal?

I wanted to make sure there wasn't something obvious I was missing prior to contacting Axiom's customer service.

any ideas?

did you take the cover off and put your ear by the tweeter ?
maybe it came disconnected ?

and I am sure you told your reciever you have a center channel now ?

I have a vp100 and it sounds anything but muffled, so you definitely have something going on there.

even less likely a problem is a polarity problem on the hookup wires, but I imagine your receiver woulda caught that during the autosetup

good luck

Randy

This is the second thread recently with a Yamaha receiver having problems with the VP series. Check here Axiom
Some of the suggestions in here may help.

Gene, welcome. There may be a problem with the VP100, but one point that isn't clear from your description is the mode you used for playing 5.1 DVDs. Playing a 5.1 DVD on a 5.1 setup doesn't require any special processing, such as DPLII, just regular Dolby Digital.

On the setting-up, probably you should have the 2500 skip the speaker size and crossover settings and manually set all small and 80Hz(also try 100Hz), as you apparently already tried.

Another possibility is that the equalization is turned on on the Yammie. This has been known to produce some inconsistent results.

I'd check the drivers, first. What you're describing sounds an awful lot like a non-working tweeter.

>>m22 and cambridge speakers are large.>>

Not related to your VP100 problem, you should set these speakers to small with a lower crossover point, such as 80 or 100hz.

I found that positioning was a very critical factor in satisfying use of my VP100.

thanks all for your suggestions.

I ended up calling Axiom and requested an exchange for VP150. They were incredibly nice about it and even offered to pay for my return shipping.

I should receive the new speaker in a few days and will post my impressions here.

When in doubt, always go with the bigger speaker.

Sounds like a good option Axiom is great, and is usually willing to take care of you, especially if upgrading within the 30 day period.

Experiment with disabling the Yamaha EQ and just calibrating manually. There's been too many posts from others that this was the problem to ignore.

Good luck and report back on the VP150.

I'll have to agree with Dave on this, if the VP150 doesn't sound right I would take a good look at your receiver, maybe even trying another receiver as a contrast.
Congrats on the upgrade and enjoy.
