Since I've purchased my EP500 I've noticed a highly irritating rattling sound coming from the port during deep bass excursions. When I first purchased it, I wasn't all that bothered, but now that I've finished acoustic treaments in my HT room, everything is great except my EP500. Please note that I am a novice enthusiast in HT. I truly hope my beautiful sub isn't broken.

P.S. The bass volume is scarcely off the dial, and have never raised it to it's max volume.

Can you give us more information in regards to your settings for the sub? Usually you want to set the crossover knob to "bypass" as you would manage the crossover in your receiver, normally 80hz.

Where do you have the volume (gain) set on the sub. The pamphlet says to start midway between the lowest setting (4 o'clock) and the 9o'clock position. With my previous EP500 and current EP600, I have mine set about 6-7 o'clock, very low. This allows me to keep my dB level adjustment on the receiver to about 0dB when calibrating all my speakers to 75db using the SPL meter.

I'm thinking based on your last statement, you may have the gain way to high on the sub, plus who knows what you have it on the receiver?

For the trim knob, usually flat is great for larger rooms, but some use Full or Half depending if they have a smaller room.

You may have an issue, but most likely it is just a calibration issue. Also, many people perceive rattles in their room as coming from the sub, how do you know it is the port?

If all else fails I would call Axiom...good luck

Drew, if you mean a metallic rattle, that definitely isn't normal and you should contact Axiom directly for information.

You don't have kids who might have stuffed objects in the port, do you?

Define "rattle".

More info is of course needed but some of the reasons that I've found for EP500 rattles are:

1) Some sort of damage
2) Wire rubbing on the amp casing
3) Wire rubbing on the port casing
4) Speaker wire terminals loose (there is a second set inside the sub on the amp casing)
5) Vibrations of something near the sub (sub cable touching, surge protector, etc.)
7) Spikes vibrating on uneven surface (need to make sure they are properly seated or switch to rubber pads)
