Is there any harm being done to an amp if it is left on all the time, I'm assuming the amp isn't getting any signals unless the receiver is on, but I'm not sure if leaving it on all the time could cause damage.

Many manufacturers of high end amplifiers recommend just leaving them all the time. For example, I recently purchased some custom Odyssey Khartago Mono's and the owner and chief engineer, Klaus recommends leaving them on all the time.

Not sure this is as important with integrated setups like a Denon though. I don't leave my 2805 on all the time.

There are two schools of thought on this subject, and I really don't want to get that debate started again. However, I will follow what the manufacturer states for my equipment to keep the large capacitors charged, etc.

I have never left an amp on 24/7 and do not see any reason for it. If they have an on and off button then they were made to be turned off imo. I used to leave my computer on all the time when one day I walked in the room and the power supply was going up in smoke. I will never do that again for sure.

The reason I asked, was I was using my Belkin to switch my amp on and off using a remote cable through my old Denon 3805, so when the receiver went on the amp did the same.
On my 4806 I'm having problems with the switched outlets, so I have to physically turn on the amp every time I watch TV or a movie. It's not a problem for me but since the whole family uses the Harmony 880, I can already envision my wife or kids calling me everytime the TV goes on because there is no sound, they will never remember to manually turn on the amp, I've forgot a couple times myself already.
As far as the original question goes, my DVR is always on never had a problem with that or any piece of equipment I've left on. If Randy's new amp is meant to be left on I'm guessing that it won't hurt to leave the amp in the on position, I'll have to try and find the manual.
I'm still debating at this point since I'm letting the 4806 run everything if I really need the amp at all.

I know but what is supposed to be gained by leaving the amp on? I see no real need.

I really hate to get this started as I know there are so many on the other side of this issue.

wid, if you want to read this page in Klaus's website it discusses the initial break-in period of their amps and the Symphonic Line. Once fully broken in you don't have to leave them on all the time, however, there will be a short period if you do where the amp will need to warm up and re-charge itself.

http://www.odysseyaudio.com/setup_tweak.html

Again, I know there are the book smart people that are on the other side of this issue. I guess I'm going to put my faith in the designers of these amps that are still in production today, since their inception in the 70's. They have to be doing something right to offer a 20year transferable warranty.

They also are not on this bandwagon like most electronic brands today where they have to keep coming out with all these gadgets, and bells and whistles, just to compete with the other 1,000 companies. Yeah, some of their boards/guts have changed over the years, but for the most part their simple, proven design has past the test of time.

I’m with ya buddy! If it has a switch, use it. But I’m a bit paranoid about this stuff after seeing a few homes go up in smoke because folks left stuff turned on. One fire was from one of those dam plug-in air fresheners. The owners went on a vacation and came home to ashes. Very sad story.

Okay, after mulling it over, I'm going with the amps out because I'm to lazy to turn it on and off manually
On the postive side I now will have some room for a new piece of equipment like a combo HD player when a decent one hits the market.

Randy, after reading that linked Odyssey material, I really have to admire Rick's restraint. Restraining myself not quite to that extent, I'll just point out that someone who builds fine equipment and is a personable fellow may nevertheless have a bizarre collection of thoughts not supported by audio principles in some areas.

I will have to find out for myself I guess. There are thousands of people out there that have great knowledge of this industry and would disagree. Maybe a $600 Onkyo is one thing, but a $7,000+ piece of high end equipment may be different.

You really are not familiar with Mr. Bunge's background with German Acoustics prior to him moving to the states, or his relationship with Rolf Gemein the founder of Symphonic Line. Rolf is one of the pioneer's of this industry and I'm pretty sure he knows what he is talking about. Klaus is very respected among the high end community, and I guess his bizarre products and familiy lineage can speak for itself.

OK, not that I care one way or the other, but my Luxman stays on 24/7. I use it on the computer, and it's just a PITA to keep turning it on and off. No other reason.

But the REAL QUESTION IS..... Randy, when are we going to get some info on that new amp?!?!? Any shut downs? Db levels? Overall impressions? Come on man!!

I cringed while reading that myself. I can understand the initial cold period right after turning on the unit, but if it takes the power supply that long to find the best electrons to send along to the rest of the device, I'd send it back. Hey, maybe that's what was wrong with the Emo?

That's a nice piece of equipment, I think I'm leaning towards getting a standalone HDDVD player, after hearing the lossless stuff on BR the 360 add on with only optical audio output just doesn't cut it anymore. Any recommendations on a HDDVD player?

The link to the Odyssey page mainly refers to the initial break-in period for the amplifiers. Obviously not everyone will agree with those statements but for everyone who doesnt there just as many who do.

It does take a few hours before the amp is warmed up and stabilized, I leave mine powered on 24/7, one, because the power switch is on the back and not convenient to turn off, and because other than drawing a few extra watts for no good reason i see no point in turning them off.

I have the X1 but you can't get them anymore. It's pretty irritating anyway. Real friggin slow and not a very intuitive user interface. The X2 is getting some pretty good praise at AVS. But, I think it is not bug free and a lot of owners are pissed at Toshiba waiting for firmware fixes.

The X2, from some of the things I've read is also excellent at up converting sd dvd's (much better than the A2). They did a shoot out with it and a Crystalio Video Processor and it did just as well. The C2 is a $4500 VP. http://www.crystalio.com/

So I don't really know what to tell ya. I think the X2 is the one to get, but I'd read some of the user threads at AVS to see what all the bugs are first. Just ignore the BS.

GrammarBot will take this one for SpellingBot.

to ===> too

i.e. - "Teacher, it's too hard to learn homonyms! You're mean!"

Grammarbot will give two bonus points for recognizing two other frequently disabling homonyms in that example.

Ha ha, I get it.

"Thank you for allowing speakergrrl to be of service. That was fun! Let's do it again!"

You're 1 for 2, as "its" is one of GrammarBot's bread and butter items. I wasn't going for "mean".

It's = It is. Always, now and forever. Never possessive.
Its = the possessive form of it.

So let's see. In this quote:

"Teacher, it's too hard to learn homonyms! You're mean!"

You respond:

Oy... "it's" is gramatically correct in the first quote. As in "I believe it's time for a Grammarbot core upgrade".
