Looks cool and all, but I like a simple flip style phone that works. The more bells/whistles (touch screen, etc), the more to go wrong... Then again, maybe I am too rough on phones, and I don't want to shell out that amount of cash for one that will be too easy to break... Now, from a "techy" point of view, it is cool, but give it another revision before jumping in with both feet. Besides, the more features you add (to any phone) the more you have to pay a month in fees and subscriptions.

I need them to make a camera free version... they aren't allowed at work. Oh well, who knows. I love my Blackberry, but I wish the internet was a bit better. Also, I'd like to get my 20GB iPod out of my pocket. Who knows, I'll not be buying one for a while (I have to get my Axioms first )

You're missing an option:

To say: "I am SO much cooler than you"

A paperweight.

/Rant
IMHO, the iPhone is the most over-hyped piece of technology for 2007. Just get ready for AT&T wanting to charge you $40+/month for just the data plan that won't include text messages, on top of the $500 for 4GB (with a freaking 2 year contract) price. A Windows Mobile 8525 will cost you a couple hundred bucks less (go buy a 30GB iPod), or can be purchased with a zero-year or 1-year contract. It will do more (3G data, push email, a keyboard, 3rd party apps, etc). Not to mention that I wouldn't trust the battery in the iPhone, as I've never had an iPod battery last more than about 12-16 months before it starts to lose it's capacity.
/Rant off

Look, I love my iPods. I'm not an anti-Apple zealot. As a geek, I'll certainly drool over the first iPhone I see in person, but I really think it's overpriced & under-featured. The gyro-sensor is neat, and I'm sure we'll see similar features on the next gen Palm/Blackberry/WM models. I've had my Cingular 8125 SmartPhone for over a year. I paid about $300 for it with a 1 year contract (my local store still does them, you just have to ask). It does everything the iPhone does and more: Email (with Direct Push - 'tis awesome), web browsing (with multiple browsers, if I choose), streaming audio (TCMP player), XM Radio (via XMRO), video (view & capture), camera (not the greatest, but it works), Edit & view Word & Excel documents, eBooks, PDF's, Google maps, Bluetooth, WiFi, not to mention the thousands of apps that are available...

The lack of keyboard/stylus is *bad*. I *know* that Apple claims that it's easy to use, and the commercials demonstrate to everyone how easy it is. But I'll believe it when I see it. The first time you use the iPhone as a phone, as any Palm/Blackberry/WM user will tell you, you're going to get 'face grease' on the screen. Now, in Apple's infinite wisdom, you've got to use your fingers to navigate the screen. So you're smearing the grease all over everywhere. Not to mention whatever gunk you've got on your fingers anyway. It becomes a real mess. I predict a surge in wet-wipe usage. With dedicated buttons and/or stylus entry, you avoid some of that. And as easily as iPod screens scratch, I hope Apple did their homework and did something better for the touch-screen.

OTOH, I do hope that the iPhone and all of the hype gives the Windows Mobile & Palm camps a swift kick in the behind as far as product & software development goes. Palm development in particular has been stale for the past few years. Microsoft hasn't been much better.

And I'll correct myself. The plan prices were announced today:

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/26plans.html

$60 for 450 minutes w/ unlimited data + 200 SMS isn't that bad, as they decided not to sock the iPhone with the usual PDA-Connect data plan that add's $+40/month.

I'm just going to ask PeterC to compose all my future replies.

I'm going to use the iPhone for another data point in the expanding set of GeekMockery indicators.

And that's the whole point of the iPhone.

It's the Paris Hilton of phones. It's cool, it's hip, it's like so totally cool. Ohmygod it's an iPod AND a Phone! Like wow, ok!? ...

And those that brandish them are just as cool and hip as the phone, cuz it's cool.

One must give credit to Apple for creating a PDA phone that is 'cool' and 'chic', and that appeals to the masses. I guarantee that it'll start appearing in the hand/purse/Mercedes Benz of various celebrity photographs in the various magazines very soon. HP/HTC/Microsoft/Palm have never really done that. Blackberry sort of had/has that mistique with the whole 'crackberry' nickname, but they never really capitalized on it. Apple has long known the power of making things easy to use, marketing, and spiffy packaging. Even though I think it's over-hyped and silly, I predict the iPhone will set all sorts of sales records and be heralded as one of the 'big things' for 2007.

Unlike almost everyone in the universe, it seems, I'm withholding judgment on the phone's usability and interface until I actually play with one.

Like the iPod before it, this so-called ground-breaking, tide-turning, <insert slightly exaggerated adjective here> Apple product is being panned left and right by tech media. It'll still sell like hotcakes and rake in the money for Apple and AT&T.

I have to single out that comment. You can't browse the web and enjoy it on current devices. It's a pain in the ass. I've got an iPaq with a decent size screen and it murders most websites. You can browse the web, but not like the iPhone can.

The face grease comment is valid, but at least the thing has optical quality glass and not plastic so it'll be even easier to clean than other devices -- and harder to scratch.

I won't be buying one, though. You can bet that the innovations in the iPhone will be making their way (minus the phone/email/web stuff) to an iPod near you soon.

To each his own.

I have no problem browsing most of 'my' websites on my 8125 when I need to. Of course, we all have different expectations of which sites we visit, so YMMV. In my case, it's news or weather sites (Wired, CNN, Google News, NWS, etc), maybe a few forums (here, AVS, AV123), and occasionally shopping on Amazon or browsing eBay. They all work just fine for me. No, it's not as nice as surfing on a real PC, but it works just fine when I need it. I highly doubt that the web experience will be as magical as the Apple commercials & demonstrations portray it to be. In other words, it's still going to be the web rendered on a 3.5" (2.8" for my 8125, 3.8" for your iPaq) screen.

Out of curiosity, is your iPaq running PPC 2000 or 2002? IE in PocketPC 2000/2002 butchered websites, I completely agree. But from WM5 on it's quite a bit better. The column modes actually (usually) work. For those websites that IE:WM5 can't handle well (I have found a few), I find that Opera Mobile does a fine job.

I have heard that IE on the new WM6 devices (the 8525, for instance) is even better, but have not experienced it.

I agree with you 100% on this point. Give me everything the iPhone has, except the phone, but give it a 30GB+ hard drive, WiFi, and charge $349-$399 for it. Sold!

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but: I WILL NOT be assimilated, resistance IS NOT futile! I sometimes leave the house just to get AWAY from the phone! I listen to my music straight from real CDs or DVDs or SACD with every darned zero or one getting through, either on speakers driven with a real sound system, or with a PCDP with quality Headphones...no buds or those goofy cheap little portable cans!(cancel that; my Wife likes her iPod with KSC75s) When I get on line I want to look at a real MONITOR no smaller than 19" and have a full-size keyboard! I figure out where I'm going before I leave and I watch the ROAD when I drive! And the speedometer is good enough to tell me how fast I'm going and if I really, really want to see which direction I'm heading, the van has a compass display. Besides; I haven't gotten lost since I was sixteen!

My Nikon F2a takes great shots or we take the Wifes' digital cam.(in the years I've had a camera phone I believe I've taken three shots with it!)And as far as video; why on earth would I want to watch a video on a teensy little screen when I'm outside in the heat when I can watch it at home on a 65" screen with full surround and enjoy the air-conditioning!? And if it displays TV; 1000 channels and nothing to watch anyway! And they ain't nothin' goin' on in my life important enough that I can't wait to get home to check my e-mail that I normally only check once every two or three days anyway!

Resistance IS NOT futile!

At first I was going to call you Jean-Luc Picard, but after further review, I am going to call you Abraham Simpson.

OK, I gotta vent. What's wrong w/ the college kids today? No sense of commitment. (Yes, I'm generalizing.)

3 of my coworkers were planning on getting iphones on Friday. Rather than pay ebay prices, we were willing to pay 3 guys $10/hr to stand in line. At 4 PM, we'd come back and take the spot to buy our iphones. One group of college guys said yes on Monday and backed out yesterday. Then I scrambled and some neighborhood kids back from school said yes on Wed. I called this morning and he says "Uh, I forgot I have to get my wisdom teeth out on Friday. So I can't go in the morning but maybe after." "So that means you can't even stand in line at all." "Uh, oh yeah, right".

GRRR!! So then I check craigslist and even put up an ad. People are bidding themselves out for crazy prices. One woman responded to me and said it's $300. I said no thanks.

I'll go online at 6 PM (not clear if it's EST or PST) and go that route. I can wait a week for it to ship from China.

That's capitalism for ya.

Oh, remember those heady days when we used to either laugh at or weep for the Russians standing in line for bread and milk? Now North Americans queue up for every little gadget they're told to.

Say what you will, but today was very cool for me.

I was in the Palo Alto Store today. Line was about 400 people at 5 PM. Apple employees cheered us on as we went in. Steve Jobs even showed up.

I was out the door by about 6:30 w/ 4 in hand. No not for ebay, for personal/work use. We went by about an hour later. No lines, but you could still buy iPhones. The current Apple tracker shows all California stores having phones. No need to go ebay, just head out to the Apple store, if you can.

Yeah, sure they are all for personal/work use and some aren't for eBay... There are about 7,500 iPhones on eBay right now going for a couple hundred dollars more than the MSRP, and you aren't selling one? Come on, we are all family here, you can be honest...

(Actually, you can do what you want, but someone dropping that much cash for FOUR iPhones seems a little crazy, then again, I think that all of us are a little crazy in one way or another. LOL)

Enjoy your iPhones. I am not wanting one, but it is like the PS3 and Wii thing. Some people just "HAVE" to have them day 1, and if you have the time, and money, to buy something that you really want, then good for you... I guess... If you have the time and money to buy 4, then by all means, sell some to the crazy fools on eBay...

Given how many it sounded like they had (my Dad got in line at 7:30 PM, got a phone by 9 PM), I don't think the eBayers are going to have all that much luck...

Nope, no ebay, no craiglist. Wouldn't make sense anyway, you can still walk in the store now and buy it.

Believe it or not, it was for work.

I bought 4 because I have a vested interest in the success of this product. I knew of this well before Macworld...

So far, it's a good product. I'm a blackberry/treo user w/ corporate access. Today, it's not corporate ready. Hopefully soon w/ some server updates. It has a high cool factor, w/ in 5 min of leaving the store, 3 groups stopped me, including a cameraman for some network.

I'd give it a 'B' overall. The widgets are very nice and easy. It does take a few strokes to make a call. But a Blackberry it is not. Still trying to figure out how to get my Entourage calendar on it. I'm sure someone will have their primer posted by Monday... Fit and finish is typical Apple, it's gorgeous.

I love how she she says" Money talks" with a big smile when she buys off the kid... Only to find out when she got inside that her money was no good ... Kudo's to apple for having enough Iphones around at launch to satisfy the demand or so it would seem.. And putting a limit on #'s purchased ... Hopefully some other companyies will see the light and act acordingly when they launch new "must have" items ...

I really wish they didn't cut away when the employee told her she could only buy one. Her reaction must've been priceless.

Another review of the iPhone... Great iPod, not so great internet, not so great phone....

iPhone Review

I know that there are others that love it, and we will see more and more come out on this little (albeit expensive) tech gadget.

Those people that have it, what are you're thoughts. Granted, by now you are already invested in the product, but do share.

Fox"News".com eh? You gotta love how they stick a picture captioned "Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles happy about their new iPhones" right in that article, as if it is really pertinent.

Actually the artice is from PC Magazine, not Fox News. They just hijacked it. The picture apparently is of Mexican immigrants, so the description seems right to me. Although it could be just as non-pertinent if it was a bunch of white Candians (just as an example) and stated "Candian hosers happy about their iPhones." Either way, it doesn't add to the article.

It could be worse though, it could be CNN? (just messing with ya. Both CNN and Fox are terribly slanted in their views. I just saw the headline linked elsewhere and didn't pay attention to where it was hosted when it was from PC Magazine.)

It sure would be non-pertinent. Apparently Canadians are not worthy enough to own iPhones .

A coworker's friend was first in line at an Apple store. A guy offered $500 for his spot and his friend said no. But his friend was only buying one so the guy offered to buy 2 iphones and give him one. So he got a free iPhone.

Of course the buyer didn't realize he only had to wait 30 before buying one w/o a line...

Great read, Mojo. Thanks for sharing. Now, can we get back to flaming each other on forums?

That's an odd position. Personally, I don't enjoy posting things from a cell phone, be it a real keyboard or a virtual one. It's just too much of a pain.

You rebel! But a guarantee you have an automatic thermostat on your central air system!

I found another news clip. This is just for fun. It isn't slamming the iPhone or praising it. It is just funny, really towards the end of the video, when CNBC says "We're not bitter about not getting an iPhone...."

iPhone Video Clip

Of course, it was pretty bad when the phone wouldn't work live on TV and then the TV show says "It doesn't work"... (Which I guess is what prompted the denial of giving out more iPhones prior to public release.)
Got to love those tech glitches right at the wrong time. Steve Jobs' old pal Bill Gates has had his share as well, but that is another story.

So what's everyone using it for nowadays?

I know what you mean. I just got a cell phone myself. It works great when I keep it turned off.

I still have never owned a cell phone. I can't imagine wanting one, except of course when I am stranded somewhere. Since I never leave the house, the chances that are slim, but who knows, a twister could deposit me in Oz or something.

In a similar vein, I had Rogers call the other day offering me up to 5 Blackberries for the business for free.

I suggested I'd look a complete prat answering a graphing calculator so I wasn't interested.
