Hi,

Any recommendations on which one of the two (980 or 981) Oppo models would be a better choice ?

I have a 1080p LCD TV to feed into and a receiver with HDMI in and out.

Welcome Siram. What size is your display? Here is what Oppo has to say:

"The DV-981HD features video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja; the DV-970HD and DV-980H use a different chipset technology for video de-interlacing and up-conversion. While all three players produce excellent picture quality and the difference is subtle, the "DCDi by Faroudja" technology is able to handle some tricky video contents. On very large TV or projector screens, the difference could be noticed by experts or videophiles. When benchmarked with contents designed to test video performance, the DV-981HD will score higher than the DV-970HD and DV-980H."

I am using the 980 with a 56" DLP display, so the 980 works best for me. If you have a large LCD display, you might consider the 981. If your display isn't that large, either the 981 or the 980 would be fine.

More comparative information on the Oppo players can be found here

I went te same through the same decision awhile back and settled on the 981. If I remember right, it was because the 980 only went up to 1080i. Since I went with a full 1080p tv, decided on the 981. Its been great thus far. I also use it to play SACD's.

Nope. It's the 970 that only goes "up to 1080i," not the 980. From the Oppo web site...

"The DV-980H supports output resolution up to 1080p. If your rear projection (DLP) TV, projector, or flat panel TV has a native resolution of 1920x1080 and can accept the 1080p/60 signal, the DV-980H is highly recommended."

"The 1080p output from the DV-980H is a pixel-perfect match for 1080p TVs."

I have a 981 and to tell you the truth since I got a PS3, I haven't turned the oppo on ... It does everything the oppo does and more.. The oppo is a fine machine for sure but for $200 more you get a lot more in a stand alone player! And with the free BR movies deals available it's a great way to get into the HD game for a minimal investment!
