Just dont know which models to look at 1st.
All suggestions welcome.

All will be paired with M60s, QS8s,VP100 and a Mits 57 inch DLP rear projection TV.

If good prices can be found I'll be upgrading to a VP150.

Current setup......

Thanks for your input in advance.

Is that before of after you're done looking at the two models in the picture?

Blu-ray players have finally started to drop in price (Sony, Sanyo), but as much as I hate to say it the PS3 is still one of the best offers out there, and until Sept 30th you can get 5 free Blu-ray movies with a purchase of a PS3.

I would agree. I don't use the PS3 as much as I should, but it's probably the best deal, considering it's also a game console and media hub.

The PS3 is still the only BR player that supports all the LPCM audio formats and video formats (including 1080P/24). It is HDMI 1.3, so I suspect that it will eventually support DTS-M and DD-HD as well. I’m continually impressed with the frequency of firmware updates Sony pushes to it, and it is by far…the fastest loading of all HD and BR players. My el’cheapo Bluetooth to IR gadget works wonderfully, so I now can use my programmable remote with it. Not having a discrete on/off remote function bothers me, but I’ve learned to deal with it.

I keep watching for a stand alone BR player to buy, but every time one comes out, there is always something that it misses. I absolutely HATE having a game machine on my rack, but there just isn’t anything that can compare to it yet.

One down side to the PS3 is SD video up conversion. It is now pretty good with the latest firmware update, but the Samsung with Reon is better (forgot which model). But, the Samsung does not support all the video / audio formats the PS3 does.

For receiver, I thought you were buying an Onkyo 875?? Or was that someone else??

I’m not a big Onkyo fan, but the 875 and 905 have me thinking differently. I would choose the 905 because it has added noise reduction over the 875, more Reon configuration options (which you will appreciate), and it is Audysey Pro compatible.

Or, if separates appeal to you, the Onkyo Pro 885 pre/pro and Integra 9.8 are looking very attractive at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the 905 has more control over the Reon than either Pre/Pro. You would loose balanced outputs if you go with the AVR’s over the Pre/Pros, but who really needs them anyway?? Unless you want to set up your amps in a bedroom closet on the other end of your home, balanced don’t do much for you….IMHO

Not me.......I have been considering the 805 but was just wondering what else was out there.
Any good news on the newest Denons??
As far as the PS3, I just thought one of the stand alones would be "better"......I guess I thought wrong.
Maybe I'll start my buying with one of those later this afternoon.
I'm just about gamed out. Between the Wii, my new "Funhouse" pinball machine and "World of Warcraft" I cant seem to find time to clean house.

Which games would you get 1st???
Any good flying games?

Brady, you haven't said what features for the new receiver interest you the most, but the Onkyo 875 which has been lab tested and reviewed in the October S&V, should be considered, along with the even more capable, but also more expensive 905, as mentioned by Mike.

I don’t know much about the Denons. The only reason I’ve been keeping up on the Onkyo’s is because I plan to go with separates, some day, and the two I mentioned are ones that I’m keeping an eye on, which usually leads to discussions comparing them all including the receivers…. You know how those forum threads go… One big complaint that the separates owners have is the lack of Reon configurations the separates have verses the 905.

As far as games go, I don’t play games. My 14 year old son does though. I picked up a couple car racing games and Resistance, Fall on Man. I don’t dare start playing because RFoM on an eight foot screen in High Def and 7.1 is wayyyy cool. RFoM is a discrete 7.1 channel game, which is why I bought it, so I could test my receiver. It’s quite eerie to hear these monsters coming at you from behind to the right or left and at the same time get shot at from the sides and directly from the front of you. I’m not sure, but this game may be the only true 7.1 channel media content available.

I like the features of the 805 I think......but with all the new features out there....I'm not sure.
Anything in the 875 that the 805 doesnt have that i should be concerned with?
I'm trying to keep the price under $1100.00.

Brady, the 875(and 905)have the Reon video processor, which the 805 doesn't. This is generally recognized as the best video scaler(for standard definition TV and DVDs)available in receivers now. How significant this would be to you would depend, as usual, on how good a scaling job your TV itself would do in comparison to what the receiver would do.

Btw Bray, how did you mount the VP100 on top of your DLP? It looks like a nice, clean mount.

Really? So the top of your DLP is fairly flat then? Unfortunately, mine only has a 2" lip on top, then it slopes away pretty sharply. When I get a center, I plan on either using an Omni Mount, or just figure out some way to mount it to the underside of the top of the entertainment center.

Thanks though.

Bray,

You might want to download and read each manual for the 805, 875 and 905. I’ve done some reading, but quickly got bored and filed them away for future reference. I’m waiting for 08 to see what else hits the streets before I buy something different, so I fail to see the need to get too far into the ‘shopping’ mode right now.

One thing I would really like to have, is independent source profiles for both video and audio. I have noticed a significant disparity between my sources with both audio and video. I can set up video input profiles for source with my DVDO VP-50, but I’m stuck with one audio profile. I use an SDI modified Oppo 981 for SDdvd, a Toshiba A2 for HD/dvd and a PS3 for BR/dvd and a satellite receiver. Each one of these has different channel levels, so every time I switch to a different source, they sound different.

My next audio processor will most definitely have this feature.

I’m not sure about the 875 and 805, but I’m pretty sure that the 905 has source input profiling for both audio and video. I also ‘think’ the 905 has noise reduction settings whereas the 875 does not…..but again, I’m not positive about that. Noise reduction is the best video enhancement you will find for SD/dvd and SD satellite/cable. Mosquito noise reduction is the best one on the market right now. If the 905 (or 875) has this over the 805, it's well worth the extra cost. You would have to spend over $1000 to get this in a stand alone noise reduction unit.
