Well, the pets at my parents house pulled really hard the interconnect cable that goes into the Line-In RCA of the EP500... I use Outlaw interconnects that have a locking system, and yes, due to the locking system, the RCA plug came undone as well... broken from inside!!!

Trying to fix it before I got home, my folks tried to open the faceplate of the amp to check on the RCA base, and guess what: they did not had the Torx with the little pins at the middle, so trying to open the faceplate they scratched all of it with improper tools!!!

Nothing to say other that the amp plate looks ugly.. I also learned tonight that the amp is not opened from the faceplate, but from 3 small screws on the plastic cover (once you remove the allen screws that support the faceplate on the cabinet). I need to find a similar RCA plug to solder in the place, or swap with the Line Out, as I dont have a second sub to chain up (yet).

Well, I have now the EP500 with no RCA Line-In and with the volume knob broken and missing (another history)... While I am not as upset with the cosmetics at the moment, I am upset I cant use the sub...

My urgent question is about connecting the RCA output of the receiver to the amp and running the EP500 from the High-Level inputs? I am not sure how it will affect the sound with that signal path, but I am hot-headed now and thinking little.

Please, some advise on this connection: Receiver-to-Amp-to-Ep500 HighLevelInput. I am worried a little as the sub signal has been already processed by the receiver+ICBM and the SMS, and I am thinking of getting the signal from the ICBM/SMS to the amp, and then to the high level inputs. Of course calibration will be a must, but do you guys see another problem with this signal path ? ?

Thanks

Why can't you use the Line out on the 500?

I can use it... they are the same connectors on the different in/out boards. That is one of the options I have in mind. But it needs soldering work, and at the current location, I have not all tools required to perform that work, like the little Torx screwdriver with the hole on the middle. Without it, I cant remove the RCA female from the amp faceplate (without scratching the plate, as already happened to my father trying to help me fix the damage). That tool is not common at all in Venezuela.

So, by the time I find the screwdriver, using the high level inputs will allow me to listen to the sub.

That is why.

Alberto, there doesn't appear to be any problem with what you propose. Using the sub pre-out of the receiver to feed one channel of the separate amp is fine, then connecting the amp output to the high-level inputs on the EP-500 results in no amp power being used because of that sub input having an impedance in the tens of thousands of ohms. Only the signal information gets through, and of course you want all the prior processing that's taken place to apply to it. The EP500 filter should be set to bypass.

In case you are wondering that torx with the pin in the middle is called ......wait for it.... a tamper proof torx.

Mac was the first company to offer the screwdriver set for them. I had to buy a bit from Snap-On the first time I ran into it on a Chrysler steering column. I quickly searched for a screwdriver set and only Mac had them.\:\)

Geez, what kind of pets you got there in Venezuela? You got some Capybara's slammin through the house? How'd they get behind the sub to yank that hard? Parents!

Yeah, kind-of scary... You know what? Next time I travel South, I am NOT bringing my EP-500 with me! Way too dangerous. And hard to explain to custom officers...

Seriously, mister, really bad mishap you got there!

Just the dog. He sometimes like to enter the house and play around instead of staying outside on his covert...

Although my mother insist that the cats were the ones playing behind the sub, but I dont think a cat can do it... or maybe they can, who knows !!!

I had the same problem a few months ago, moved the sub a bit too far and the cable snapped off the line in input.

Fortunately, you can use the line out input with the same cable you are currently using (got this info from Brent @ Axiom), with no problems.
