Murph, he said to cross the wires at 45 degrees which is dead wrong of course. They should be crossed at 90 degrees.

He was pulling your leg. But I'm concerned he told you to saw off the ground lug. Other things that he said would have been harmless to you but this one could have resulted in injury or even death.

Yes, you should definitely have shielded cable for low voltage signals on interconnect cables. Notice that your on-line friend never mentioned this.

It's more likely that the original cable was defective ground-wise. That's happened to me before.

Personally, Iam thinking of transcribing all of my 33 1/3 albums to 78. Twice the speed is twice the fidelity! That's what I say. I will be handcarving the 78's with my dremel tool.
