I'm having some kind of an issue with our PC not being able to burn a disc and am curious if somebody minds burning me a copy of the 2.7 firmware update? I sure would appreciate it.

We picked up the HD-DVD Bourne Ultimatum this afternoon and 57 min 20 sec into the movie the A2 locked up solid, the first time I had to pull the power plug for the machine to respond to any commands, the second time it froze the screen at the same 00:57:20 mark but responded to the stop command and I just shut it down to avoid what was about to become a backdoor slam. I'm thinking it may be a firmware issue due to the newness of the movie. (I hope)

I do have the 2.5 update, thank you very much Nick ... but due to the PC problem I've never updated to the 2.7 firmware.

PM me and I'll PM you back with the details, thanks in advance.

Yeah, I could have sent you a copy too, but like I said, due to my being out of town for work, it wouldn't have been until January 2008, so I am glad that someone else is hooking you up!

Rick, don't you have broadband? Just hook up your A2 to the internet and download it automatically.

Thanks guys but I believe ol' Rick has one on the way, and again thanks to you Nick for the 2.5 update disc, that very kind of you!

Randy, we've got something up with our PC that is not allowing me to burn copies onto the media disc. Hmmm, I wonder what I now *need* for Christmas since the Fender custom shop $17k SRV 'Lenny' strat is sold out. ;\)

Wait a minute...Randy, did you say connect the A2 directly to the PC for the download?

you can hook the a2 directly up to your modem with an ethernet cable for the update. you need a tv next to your modem, or an ethernet cable long enough to reach from your modem to your tv.

Or, if you're using a router, you can hook the A2 into an unused ethernet port, and install the firmware that way. It takes a little longer to install the firmware from the internet (20 to 40 minutes), but I find it a bit easier that burning a disc. YMMV.

Yep, not saying burn to a cd. The back of the A2 has a ethernet connection.

Yep, OK now I remember ... the long distance we have between the closest TV and the modem was the reason I didn't download the 2.5 version direct to the A2, I forgot about that.

Rick, just wondering if you have had any other problems with other HD DVDs, I watched the Bourne Identity Tue. on the day it was released from Netflix and it locked up on me twice, after rubbing the disc clean it seemed to work okay, but that is the first time I've had an issue with any HD movies. Has anyone else had a problem with this movie?

I had a SD copy hiccup somewhere in the middle. Not a total freeze but it sure wasn't pretty. Today I had the same thing happen with the new Die Hard (SD) movie.

Michael this was a brand new disc out of the box but after the first lockup I did take a look at the disc and didn't notice anything unusual but still wiped it anyway, the second lockup occurred at the exact same time (:57:20) at which time I just parked it. We watched about half of the SD-DVD POTC 'At Worlds End' this evening without nary the first hitch.

No problems with any of the other HD disc we've watched but we have had it skip a couple of times with at least three SD movies we've watched. Whenever we were watching the SD-DVD version of The Aviator it started skipping quite often, I rebooted the A2 and everything was fine during the heavy skipping parts and for the remainder of the movie.

I will guess these lock-ups are at the layer break and will happen from time to time. I had a Sony DVD player that had a very hard time with layer breaks so I returned it.

Jason, what do mean by layer breaks? I've noticed that it doesn't take much of anything to have either one of our Sony MegaChangers skip, the least little scratch or dust and they will skip.

I watched Die hard 4(SD) yesterday on my Toshiba A2. There was a hiccup around the 58 min mark. The picture stopped for about 3 seconds then jumped back to normal.

On SD movies they have put so much extra crap on the movie disc that the DVD's are built in layers so there are actually 2 layers of reading material on the disc. Now when a player reaches the end of the first layer it is supposed to sync up to the next layer but if the laser has a hard time reading through to the second layer the player will hiccup or just stop until it figures things out.

This is what made me start backing up my discs because the software out there will remove the layer break points and burn just the movie to a single layer disc. You also loose some of the video signal on long movies but on a 480i screen it can get as low as 70% quality before it is noticeable, at least for me. I have played back my back ups on higher res TV's and unless it was burned at 100% they look terrible.

Do you have cable TV/internet? because if you do, you could just unplug your modem and hook it up at the cable jack by your tv and your A2. Then run an ethernet directly from the modem to the A2... you won't even need a computer nearby for that. when you are done, just put the modem back where you got it ;\)
