I am new in the forum and I am looking for a pair of bookshelves speakers to use with my sony receiver STR-DE697.

It is my understanding that the 7.1 receiver I got is a low end system and it does about 70 to 100 Watts (MAX) so I am seeking advice as what version should I get?

The new speakers I am looking for a primarily gonna be hooked up to my iPhone to listen to musics.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

what is your budget? how big is your room? so your going to hook the iphone to the receiver I assume? Anyway, all the axiom speakers are very efficient and will use 1 watt to achieve very loud levels from 3ft away (1 meter). Your Sony will be fine.

A speaker that is rated at 90-95dBs 1 watt 1 meter, is pretty loud.

sirquack, thanks for the speedy reply.
My budget is around $500 dollar for the pair.

I often hear that a good/high-end speaker needs matching preamp/apm to get the best result.

What should I do in my case? I am hopping to get the best result using my current all-in-one receiver.

Can I add a simple pre-amp to the receiver? will it make a difference?
Would I be wasting my money if I go for a more expensive speaker model?

Thanks again.

You won't be wasting your money in the slightest. In fact, adding a pre-amp would be the biggest waste of money. You can always change out the receiver later if you feel it's not giving you what you want.

I'd go with M3s if you're not getting a sub; M22s if you are.

Most likely the sony will be fine. If you ever added an external amp, the receiver would be the preamp and you would bypass the sony's internal amp. However, you might be better off just upgrading your receiver. Unless you really crank things up in a very large room, you will be fine. Again, the speakers will only use 1-2 watts most of the time to achieve pretty loud results, with brief peaks during certain music, your sony should be able to handle if it is rated at 70 or more watts per channel.

I have an old Sony STRD915(?) that I have my M22s hooked up to and they sound great even with out a sub. Don't worry about needing an extra amp nor preamp.

Met, welcome. Forget any stuff that you may have heard about your 697 being "low-end" or that you should get more expensive amplification to "match" good speakers such as the Axioms. One of the great things about the current audio scene is the excellent receivers that are available to us at quite low cost and amplify with transparent quality. No need for the high-priced stuff that some push.

Consider getting a pair of M22s to enjoy your music more, as I've been doing with mine now for six years.

Welcome Metro.
I agree with all above. Don't be concerned at all about your receiver unless you plan on playing at extremely loud levels. I'm talking, nobody can hear each other at the party, kind of loud.

I have not heard the M3s or M22 myself but both seem to be very well respected and popular choices. I'm wondering what kind of music you listen to and what your listening preferences are. Many people here strive to recreate the music as close to 'exactly how it was recorded' as possible. Others like to kick up the bass a notch or three.

M22s are known for an amazing accuracy and will do wonders for good source material but I noticed that you said you will be playing all your music from your Iphone.

If that is the case, your music will most likely be stored in a pretty compressed format and the M3s might be a better choice for you. I believe they are a bit more forgiving when playing compressed music. The accuracy of the M22s might tend to bring out the degradationsthat storing music in a compressed format creates.

If you have a PC, there are some great options to avoid this but I want to keep my post simple. Just wanted to mention my thought on the I-Phone possibly coming into the equation.

The M22 owners can perhaps verify or debunk my thoughts on this as I have never tried compressed music via M22s myself.

With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

I would suggest streaming all of you music from you PC as uncompressed FLAC files and get the m22.
