I'm helping my brother in-law get setup with a new HT system, Just ordered a Denon 3808 from 6th ave. Now looking at 40" to 46" inch 1080p Lcd, has to be able to fit into a 46" cabinet.

My big question is whether it's worth the extra dollars getting an Lcd with a 120Hz refresh rate or saving some cash and getting a 60Hz. Also any model or brand recommendations that have excellent PQ would be appreciated.

I haven't seen any TVs with the new 120Hz refresh rate so I can't help much with that. I've read some reports where people are saying it looks odd, but that may be because they are not used to it.

As for picure quality, I spent a lot of time at different stores just staring at the different brands and in some cases adjusting the TVs as I saw fit. I know everyone hates them, but I liked Sonys the best. Samsung and Sharp were just a step below. I didn't think the LGs were too bad, especially for the money.

Hi Homedad,

I looked at a lot of models when i was looking to buy one.
Try to compare the model side-by-side and the same DVD. We found the Sharp to have more reddish color and blacks, not so black. We settled for a Sony 46" XBR2. I am very happy with the performance. Looks gr8 with PS3, HTPC, Dish. I am happy i spent the extra bucks to get Sony.

I couldnot tell the difference with the 120HZ. Maybe gamers can chime in.

Regs,
Avi

The biggest difference should actually be in movies, not games, as most games are coded with 60 fps or 30 fps in mind. it's the video cameras that take 24fps that makes the problem. with a 60 fps tv it has to do all the 3:2 pulldown and that jazz to make the picture appear smooth. my TV doesn't have the 120 Hz so I can't vouch, but I did see a Sony LCD the other day in Circuit City with a Blu Ray player playing Night at the Museum and all I could think was "wow that looks like I'm looking through a window." Maybe it's the quality of the TV, but I assume that 120Hz had to have something to do with it's smoothness, because I watch a lot of Blu Rays and I've never thought it looked that smooth. I guess the question is how much of a premium it is. I'd like to hear from someone who has one of those TVs in their house though.

I researched for about 6 or 7 months (not sure if that trait is a shortcoming or a virtue?) before I bought a Sony XBR4. I thought that I was going to buy a Mitsubishi because it had the narrow bezel and a 52" could fit into my cabinet. Both the Sony and the Mits Diamond have the 120 hz refresh.

I was coming back early from a business trip around 2:30 in the afternoon on a Wednesday. Since I was in research mode for a TV, returning to the office was the furtherest thing from my mind. I stopped into the Tweeter in Winston-Salem and I was the only customer in there for over 2 hours. The Mits and the Sony were together...so some of the sales staff and I sat down, adjusted the lighting so that it was not on the TV's and proceeded to play and adjust the TVs. We checked out all kinds of material and feeds from Blue Ray to regular upconvert DVD to cable. We placed the TVs on similar settings (out of torch mode) and compared and compared. For me, the Sony stood out and I ultimately bought it. Of course it is way too big for the cabinet, so I put it in the bonus room over the garage. The acoustics are much better there anyway - so when I finally go Large with the Axioms, the sound quality will be better with no need for room treatement. Truthfully, if you had either TV at home without the other to compare to, you would be stunned with the excellence of the picture - given a good input - but enough about me.

I do not see any funky artifacts or picture quality with the 120 hz. I have never seen motion blur during movies or sports - including the Superbowl, Soccer or the ACC Playoffs or the NCAAs. I have never seen the ghosting or clouding or flashlights or any of the other problems reported over on AVS. I purposely waited for the 120 hz to avoid the blur. It may not have been present on 60 hz - I did not bother to check it out.

I did have picture quality problems - but they were related to the cable signal strength and on the third service call, Time Warner sent in the "A Team". He checked strength up and down the street until he determined that I needed a booster. That cleared up the problems.......probably TMI (too much info - as my daughter says) but there you are.............Argon

For me i was torn between Sony's XBR5 and Sharps D92U image processors. Both very good with motion and color.I was in a local electroincs store one day and they had the Sharp and the Sony side by side in a theater room.Batman Begins on HD DVD was playing,Iwas sold on the Sharp.Sony's black levels looked gery next to the Sharp.Myself I would go 120hz.

I did not think this was a big deal, until I actually expirienced it myself. I was lucky enough to pick up a Sony KDS 60A3000, which is a 120Hz/24 refresh TV, and it is amazing. Some of my Blu-ray movies really do have that 3D or window affect. Even my wife who was not sold on a new TV, afterwards said it really was one of the best upgrades we have made. Heck it helped pave the way with the wife in regards to upgrading to the Axioms.

Thanks for the responses everyone, right now a couple of the sets we are looking at are the Toshiba 46XF550U, Samsung LN46A750, and the Samsung LN46A650 these are sets we've been able to get pretty great deals on.
I think he's decided to go with 120Hz which is probably what I would of done ( we both hate looking back and wondering) ;\)
