Through all this Yamaha 1400 stuff I'm dealing with, the bottom line is I got my M22's and 150 today. I gotta say that the center is a damn monster. It looks so good on a WEGA. They sound great. This is the first time I ever had my whole setup the same brand of speaker and what a difference it is having all the speakers timbre matched. The left-to-right panning is seamless. As far as the possible lack of midbass, there may be some truth to that. I didn't play them flat, but YPAO adjusted 125Hz by +5, 315Hz by +6 and 4.5 for the M22's and 160Hz -5.5 & 250Hz + 5.5 for the 150. As far as the upper frequencies go, it adjusted 6.3kHz to +4.5, +5.5 and +4 and 10kHz to -4, -4 and -2.5. From what I've read about these speakers I guess it's fairly expected. This is one reason I really like the Yamaha. I think I should just exchange mine and if the preout performance doesn't change I'll just have to deal with it. But for my room size I think the M22's were the right size. Whadya all think about just buying a multi-band EQ and adjusting all of the channels using an SPL meter. I know it's not as easy as MCAAC and YPAO, but buying an external EQ would offer you many more bands of equalization. I know buying a minimum of three two-channel EQ's would cost a bit, but wouldn't that be the best solution to equalizing the sound to match the acoustic characteristics of your room?

I don't have personal experience with YPAO, but I can tell you that no combination of an SPL meter, test tone series, and hours of manual tweaking can beat the accuracy and almost ridiculous ease of the MCACC. Adding an external EQ to your system may be easy. But you really need a real-time spectrum analyzer to properly adjust it. What's great about MCACC/YPAO is the fact that it packages all these elements right into your receiver almost transparently.

There is no need for extra eq if you have YPAO. It would be great if it would eq more bands but for average home set ups I think it does a amazing job and couldn't be simpler.

If you use external eq, why have the 1400 at all? Besides, with an external eq you would also need to buy or rent a Real-time analyzer unless you bought something like the TacT T or Berhinger.

While there could very well be a problem with your 1400, I can't help but beleive that there must be some setting, buried somewhere in the set-up menus/programs that is being over looked.

Masa,

YPAO like MCACC is also very simple to set-up and use. You are welcome to scoot on over sometime, in your spiffy new Honda, and check out the YPAO.
