OK...well I don't think it would apply but I will let you know briefly what I went through - there may be something in it.

I had a modem/router connected to a separate wireless router that I was only using the wireless on. I had this setup when I upgraded my main PC to Vista and everything went well. I then purchased a wireless modem/router to replace the separates I was using prior. This didn't connect so was replaced by a second and then a third all of the same brand (but different models). I then went to a different brand but still no success. I had purchased the 3808 by this stage but could not get an IP address on it so it was not connecting to the modem. The only way I could get the Vista machine on the net was by connecting the separate units back up again but then was still not able to get an IP on any other machine or the 3808.

I then took most of the hardware to my brothers and tested it on his line with success. Upon returning home I spent weeks disconnecting and reconnect, resetting to factory settings and upgrading firmware (on modems etc) but with no success.

I went to a couple of Vista forums and found other people were having similar strange networking issues that no-one at that time could explain.

Through all this I formed the opinion that somehow/somewhere Vista was storing infomration about the modem and network that was first used to connect it to the web. It seemed to me that anytime anything else would try to connect or when ever a different modem was used (I could go back to the original seperate units anytime with success) the Vista machine would not connect.

I eventually bit the bullet and did a clean install of the main PC back to XP. Then did another clean install to Vista and then connected through the 4th modem I had purchased. This connected first time and from then everything including the 3808 has connected first time without failure.

I still don't really know what it was but I don't trust Vista to not be currupting something somewhere and I thought long and hard before finally installing it again. Still not 'SOLD' on it.

As I said this is probably of no help at all now that you are not on Vista but I don't know enough about networking to rule out some type of conflict at a level above the 3808.

As far as suggestions go - try to rule things out by moving elements of your network around. Try swapping cables to rule out a faulty cable, try connecting a different modem if you can get your hands on one, if you have a wired home - try different access points. Try a different PC/laptop and different ports on the modem. If you have a switch involved - try different ports on this as well. As I said, I did this for a couple of weeks but it all eventually led me in the right direction.

Hope this is of some sort of help...

UPNP is definetly off so it shouldn't be an issue. I'll have to try running a cable directly from the modem later on when I get home to see what happens.

Lorenzo,

If using DHCP on your home LAN then the set up should be relatively simple:
- Hook up an Ethernet cable from the Denon device to your LAN (router should work OK here) but MAKE SURE you are plugged into the ethernet port on the 3808;NOT the Denon Link port beside it)
-Go to the Network Menu setup option on the GUI.
-Set the Denon for DHCP.
-Go to Network Information and see if your Denon is getting an IP address from the router.
-If you have an IP address assigned by the router you are home free.
-See page 20 for set-up,
-See page 24 for GUI option for firmware update under Manual Setup in the lower right corner.

If you are still stuck, you may need to reboot the router and reset the receiver.

Once that is done, follow these steps to reset the 3808 (you will need to re-do the settings in the receiver after these steps):
1) Unplug the Ethernet cable.
2) Turn off the main power.
3) Hold down the 'Standard' and 'DSP Sim' buttons (note: microprocessor reset "hard reset")
4) Turn on the main power
5) After the display flashes 5 times or so release the buttons
6) After the unit finishes booting up turn off the main power
7) Hold the 'up' and 'down' arrow buttons (note: this described in instructions procedure #2 for firmware prior to 1.57)
8) Turn on the main power
9) After the display flashes 5 times or so release the buttons.
10) Re-connect the Ethernet cable
11) After you see an IP address in network info, try updating the firmware again.

The process for doing the firmware update using the buttons on the face of the receiver:
- Be sure the 3808 is attached to a network.
- Open the front panel
- Push MENU.
- Scroll to MANUAL SETUP
- Scroll to OPTION SETUP
- Scroll to FIRMWARE UPDATE
- START

If none of the above helps you, this is a great resource to help you through the setup process for networking the 3808. The first few pages have several links to detailed info that will get you there.

There is also an extensive 3808 owners thread on AVS. Might be worth a trip and do a search on network, networking, ethernet, router, etc.

Thanks Ray and everyone else for your help with this. I am going to take another run at it when I get home from work later on.

So I got home re-booted the router and modem, reconnected the cable, turned DHCP on and bam it worked! The receiver is downloading the firmware update as I type. Thanks everyone for your help on this. Hopefully the rest of the process goes smoothly.
