Since there is a chunk of the new Batman movie filmed in full IMAX, I have been told that I "HAVE" to see it at an IMAX theater. Most of the movie is regular wide screen, but then during some of the more dramatic action scenes, it switches to full IMAX mode and is just "WAY AWESOME" according to one review I read.

Here is the problem. In Des Moines, we have an IMAX, but it is one of the IMAX "domes" and not the traditional 5-story tall screen with extreme stadium seating. How well are the "domes" for watching longer movies (The Dark Knight is 2.5 hours long)? I would hate to go there and then end up disappointed because of the extreme curvature of the screen for the non-IMAX filmed part.

Anyone? (I am sure/hoping that Craig/spiffnme will respond too)

I wouldn't recommend seeing The Dark Knight in a dome theatre. I just checked and was surprised that it is indeed playing in dome theatres. It simply wasn't shot for that format. How far away is the next closest traditional IMAX theatre?

Thanks for the heads up.

That is what I was wondering. It looks like the closest is either 160 miles east of the Des Moines, Iowa area in Davenport, Iowa, or 135 miles west in Omaha, Nebraska. The Davenport one shows that it will be playing The Dark Knight, but I'd need to call to get times, and the Omaha one doesn't even show that it will be having anything but IMAX movies showing.

Not sure that I can convince my wife to drive with me 5 hours there and back to watch a movie especially since I would have to go to the 9PM show and wouldn't get home until around 2AM and have to be up for work at 6AM...

Bummer...

Don't forget to add the gas money in to the price of a ticket when determining whether it's worth your time and money.

Thanks.

Let me see if there's a spot in marketing for you Peter...

I'd suggest making a full day of it. Find some other things there you could do spend the day in the city and catch the movie in the evening.

Opportunity cost. Let's not underestimate all the ways in which you can enrich your life, or the world, with that ticket, gas, and babysitter money.

For only 99¢ a day, you can make a real difference in the life of this child.

This looks like your best bet,

Star Cinema 16
3220 23rd Ave.
Council Bluffs, IA 51503
712-256-7827

Unless of course you wanted to spend a weekend in MPLS, see the sights and sounds there and catch the movie while you're there.

Bummer you don't have more IMAX theatres in your area.

My family has seen several feature films in IMAX. Frankly, we don't really go to traditional theatres very often; when we see movies, it is either IMAX or at home. IMAX is a tremendous experience, and I'm grateful that their business model (and skilled employees) allow them to present some of this mainstream content.

I'm going to have to convince the wife to see this one in IMAX...it is pretty much the only way I go to the theaters anymore....IMAX is the one environment where the sound and picture can beat what I have at home.

Fortuately, I work about 2 miles from an IMAX, so it isn't far to go.

How much do IMAX tickets run these days? I was amazed to see that regular tickets were $10.25.

You guys are spoiled. I just went to a small theatre and saw "The Visitor" (two thumbs WAY up btw) and the tix were $12 each for a teeny tiny screen.

Well, I saw the Dark Knight last night, but alas, not at an IMAX.... :-(

I enjoyed the flick a lot, and I could tell where some of the scenes where that would have made some VERY impressive IMAX sequences (jumping off of the building in Hong Kong), etc... It is too bad that I won't get to see it in that format unless something takes me to one of the cities that has the larger format.

(WARNING: Possible spoilers depending on how much you read into the following statements)
For those people wondering about the movie, all I will say is, "yes, it is dark and yes, there are absolutely, positively no real 'feel good' moments in the movie." You will leave the theater understanding more about the inner workings of a psychopath (Joker) and what it means to be a hero, but there is a lot of death, and a lot of "huh, that sucks" pieces to the film. Not saying that the movie is bad at all, it would be like watching the old TV show Lassie and having the Martin family die, the dog's favorite toy get destroyed, and at the end of the TV show, Lassie is being chased by the city pound...

I saw it last night, too. I really liked it... way more than Batman Begins. The praise Heath Ledger is receiving is well-deserved. I've never really liked him, but for some reason I was looking forward to seeing this performance. Not a disappointment. You have to give a lot of the credit to the screenplay. Good material to work from.

Oh, and is it a bad sign that I found myself identifying more with the Joker's reasoning than Batman's?

Saw "The Dark Knight" at the Imax theater today.

Wow! What an experience. I absolutely loved the movie. The Imax shot scenes were incredible. The story line was great, the acting good, and the special effects were intense. So far, these two latest Batman movies have been exactly what I've wanted out of a "super hero" movie.

Also, this was my first Imax movie and didn't know what to expect. Next time I think I'll sit a little farther back. Sometimes I had to press my head back into the seat to follow the action, but once I got used to the big format it wasn't so bad. Like I said before, the scenes shot in the Imax format looked spectacular and really brought the wonder and awe back to film. The movie also sounded great with explosions being felt and dialogue coming through clearly (for the most part). Truly an immersive experience. Thumbs up!

I wish the closest IMAX wasn't 2.5 hours away. People tell me that one sucks, though, and I should go to the one in Seattle... but I don't know when that'll happen. I'm jealous.

Sadly I'll have to wait for this one on Blu-ray, it's probably not suitable for me to take a 4 and 7 year old to it. But I have to give my little ones some props, they both survived Space Mountain at Disneyland this weekend. \:\)

Yeah, Michael, I'd definitely say this is more of an adult movie, despite the PG-13 rating. I'm not sure I'd even take my 9 year old nephew to see it.

The movie brings up some complex issues I'm not sure some youngsters can quite get a grip on.

Yeah...when we were watching the dailies, and knew this was rated PG-13, we were scratching our heads. Clearly Mr. Nolan has clout with the MPAA.

Someone posted a link to this article on ClubNeon's Facebook page, and I thought it was cool. Apparently the Boeing IMAX at Pacific Science Center in Seattle is one of the ones with the new laser projection, so I'm hoping I can see Hubble 3D when I visit my sister this week. If not, I'm going to try to convince someone to go with me the weekend of my birthday to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens (after seeing it in Spokane on the 19th--I think Spokane's is a traditional film IMAX).

Very nice!

I didn't make it to Hubble 3D during my visit. We went, but I didn't check ahead to make sure on the times. Everyone could have gone... except for my dad. He was busy parking the car, and with the parking being underground, we of course couldn't get ahold of him on his phone, either.

I double-checked the Spokane IMAX tickets I bought. They're actually for the IMAX 3D screens at the mall theater, so not the one that does normal film. I couldn't find any preorder options for that IMAX, so I assume they're not showing it there. But that's okay. I'm sure it will still be better than what we have in the Tri-Cities, although I'm excited to finally hear Dolby Atmos in our new theater that's opening December 11th.

The road trip to Spokane with friends will be fun, no matter what. And I did already buy tickets for Star Wars at Boeing IMAX for the weekend of my birthday, so I'll get to compare the experiences. I was going to invite you, Tom, but you're going sooner, which I figured was likely.
