Hey guys and gals, I came across this amazing movie called Baraka(not political) on Google video (free to download in mp4 format)and I can't get enough or say enough about it. I've only watched it on my computer but I'm definitely going to rent it. It's the most beautiful and visually stunning movie I've ever watched and there's no dialogue whatsoever, just music in the background. I very much doubt that too many have heard of this movie so I thought I would mention it because it's not to be passed up and I know the audio would shine on our Axioms. Check it out, I guarantee you won't regret it.
Cheers

It comes out on Blu-ray Oct. 28, I've put in my Netflix Queue.

It's a great film. I saw it on cable(INHD) a couple years ago. Stunning visuals and sound. There's another film called Chronos that was made by the same director. It is shot using time-lapse cinematography. I encourage you to check it out as well.

Baraka was/is my first DVD. I still feel 'attached' to it. It was actually a freebie inside the box of the first DVD player (a JVC of some sort) that I purchased, back in '96 or so. Talk about a company actually including a useful freebie. I've watched it all the way through two or three times, but individual parts dozens of times as I still use it as demo material. I've shown it to many friends and family members. A long time ago, many of them didn't yet have a DVD player. I'm pretty sure that DVD was responsible for at least a half dozen DVD players being purchased (back in the day). Absolutely fascinating film. Incredible DVD. I'm sure the Blu-Ray version will be even more awe-inspiring. Never mind the extremely thought-provoking subject manner, but the stunning visuals and amazing sound absolutely blew my mind. The first time I watched it, I vividly remember saying out loud, "holy $#%@. This is why DVD was created." Parts of it still give me the chills and can bring a tear to my eye (the aircraft graveyard, the oil wells, etc). I own Kronos too. It is excellent as well, but I feel it lacks the raw emotional impact that Baraka has. Baraka has a point, Kronos is mostly just eye candy (IMHO). If you want to see other interesting films like Baraka, check out Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi. Koya and Powa are pretty good too, Nago - less so. Koya and Powa are done by the same cinematographer as Baraka. They are a bit 'weirder' than Bakara, but the same sort of film.

Your statements and feelings regarding Baraka are shared wholeheartedly. I just watched Koyaanisqatsi and although it's a great film, Baraka has set the bar IMO. Thanks for the other suggestions, I will definitely check them out.

It truly is a special film, and I've only watched it on my computer, but the thunderstorm scene startles me every time and I'm using Paradigm Monitor 9's without a sub. I can't wait to hear it through my Axioms!!

Wow, I'm depressed just reading about some of those scenes. It does sound like a Must View film, though.

Anybody see the new Hulk? I would say it was as good or better than Iron Man.

Good to hear. I have not seen it. This is the one with Ed Norton, right? If so, I was looking forward to seeing it since I missed it when it came through the theaters.

Baraka review by Roger Ebert here “’Baraka’ by itself is sufficient reason to acquire a Blu-ray player.” I am in 100% agreement with those reviews. And that's just from watching the DVD. Baraka on BR, that may be the reason I finally break down and buy a BR player.

I have to The Incredible Hulk to watch again (saw it in the theater), but I enjoyed Iron Man more after just a first viewing. The love story in The Incredible Hulk kind of turned me off. I was tired of seeing two scientists get overwhelmed with emotion whenever they were near each other. I like my scientists to be dispassionate robots. The endings of both movies left a bit to be desired, I thought, but still, as far as superhero movies go (okay, one is a rich guy in a suit, and the other is a monster who does heroic things), both were fun.

I enjoyed them both but would have to give the edge to Iron Man, the Hulk however with the buttkicker on felt like it was pounding holes in the floor.

I did watch The Incredible Hulk this morning, and I did like the bass, though I didn't feel Iron Man was lacking in that, either. I'm sure they'll be even more fun after I'm running dual EP800s, whenever I can pay that off. I'm thinking I'll put my preorder in on Monday. I'm still semi-interested in a HSU Research ULS-15 QuadDrive setup, but I imagine the DSP-controlled EP800s would be more linear.

I just pre-ordered Baraka in Blu-ray, from the sounds of all the reviews, not only it is a great movie but will be a great disc to show off my system.

I can only imagine what it would be like on Blu-ray, I'm sure you'll love it!! I found this website spirit of baraka which lists other movies like Baraka and gives a synopsis of each movie. They all looked phenomenal, and I've downloaded a couple on Google video, but The Blue Planet looks like it would be audibly and visually stunning.

I found the same thing. The boom in one of the opening scenes was the most lifelike I had heard to date.
Interestingly on the Bridge of Khazad Dum scene everone raves about, I was less than impressed. I wonder if that has something to do with the EP350 not being able to reach as low as the 500 or 600?

+1 on Iron Man. There is great LFE throughout. The scene where he emerges from the cave in his first suit is also thunderous.

I'm a fan of The Cranberries and I have The Cranberries: Beneath the Skin Live in Paris (version 2) on its way from Zip and I was wondering if anyone has seen it. It has gotten very favorable reviews like this one .

The Cranberries were the first band I really got into. I do have that concert disc (had version 1 with the horrible menus as well), but I don't think I've watched it all the way through. I don't think I've tried watching it since getting my Axioms, actually. I remember thinking the quality was pretty good, though it wasn't necessarily her strongest performance. I liked Dolores's stage presence more toward the beginning of her career. I watched their first concert video (simply The Cranberries Live on VHS a lot way back then, so I was glad when they finally put that on DVD.

"Dreams" and "Zombie" were probably their two biggest hits. I bet you'd recognize them if you heard them.

I think they wrote that song while on tour supporting their first album--you know, the one that sounded good. "Zombie" was definitely unlike all the other songs on the second record, which all sounded similar save for the one. Made "Zombie" seem even better and the rest more of the same.

I actually like several of the songs off that album. I never thought they sounded too samey. These days I do prefer the first album, but the second album was my first, so I'll always have a soft spot for it.

Yeah, CV, that v1 menu is really weird. They tried too hard to make you think you were in the Matrix, or something.

Dolores has done solo stuff in the past little while. Funny little story, for some reason she was in this tiny city of Peterborough and my sister ended up doing her nails a year or two ago, and she told my sister about her solo projects.

They're not together. I don't know if they'll never do anything together again or not. I stopped paying that close of attention. Dolores has a solo album. Noel had another project, but I don't know if his CD came out or not. Oh, it did: CD Baby: MONO BANDI imagine Mike has done nothing but enjoy his money and get fatter. I'm not sure what Fergal has been up to.

I remember that one (or more?) of the guys had really bad stage fright at the beginning of the band's career. I could imagine that "that one" would enjoy being out of the limelight again...
