Has anyone bought anything from http://www.memory.com ? seems legit but just wanted to see...

I always buy directly from Crucial. Never had any issues with them. I don't know anything about memory.com.

Well... My GF's computer that she bought to years ago has only been running on 512mb of RAM this whole time.

I upgraded it to 4 GB of ram (4, 1 gig chips) and, WOW... what a difference.

I always go with crucial, however one of the two 2GB ram sticks I bought for my dell notebook was bad, don't know if this led to file corruption that caused me to have to revert to factory state, next I have to see if they will back up their product. I suppose all companies produce some duds.

I just called and uppded my internet to the 12MB download speed version. They claimed my upload speed would only be 768 kb/s but I just did a speed test at Speakeasy.net and It said my upload speed is 3.7 megs / sec.

Time to go play some video games now!

Lucky dog! I'm stuck with 1.3 mbit download speed (suburb speed you might say). I had 5 mb for a while with Charter but the modem and router would always lose their handshake and have to be rebooted and the service was always going offline sometimes for more than a day at a time, you can't have that. With att and wireless gateway (integrated modem/router) it's hugely reliable even if only minimal in terms of dsl speed.

Gah. Wish I could get faster DSL. I'm willing to pay for it, but AT&T doesn't want to bother with my neighborhood.

I've never heard of memory.com before, so I have no advice on them. B

When I need computer parts, I almost always find myself ordering from newegg.com. I've spent a couple grand with them over the past 4 or 5 years, ordering everything from routers and USB drives to power supplies and CPU's, to and entire 'kit' systems. They have a memory-upgrade/guide applet too, and I've used it several times in the past in helping upgrade a friend's or relative's computer.

I've never had a problem with them. They ship promptly and their prices are usually (but not always) about the best I can find. And for the record, I have no affiliation with them. I'm just a satisfied customer. Oh, and another +1 for Crucial memory. Good stuff. I've never had a memory-related problem when using Crucial, even their 'Value-Select' line. In my experience, it's worth the extra couple of dollars over generic memory.

O/T: 12mb, eh? That's pretty good. I'm on Verizon DSL in my neck of the woods. I have their fastest service offered here, 3mb/768k for $29/month and I'm quite happy with the cost & service. Very reliable and I get very consistent true dl speeds of 2.85-2.9mb/s even during peak hours. Our local cable co offers a 20mb service for about $60/month that one of my co-workers subscribes to. He says it's pretty fast.

I'm surprised to hear that some of you living in far more urban areas don't have better broadband options. I live in a podunk town of 19k people in the middle of farm country in central Illinois.

I pay $41 per month now for the 12 megs down and 768 kb up plan. I was paying $30 for 3 megs down and 300+kb up.

The actual speed I tested was 9 megs down and 3.8 megs up as mentioned.

They actually have another plan that is $60 per month that is supposedly up to 20 megs down.

The SF Bay Area has crappy options for connectivity. I don't know why. Freakin' AT&T and Craptastic probably have something to do with that. Damn I wish we had Verizon.

We have a 10MBit symmetrical connection at the office. It's only costing us about $2000/month--of course, that includes about a mile of dark fibre, a rack with 2 20 amp circuits, etc...

Curious to know what type of service you have. Cable, fiber to the home, ADSL 2+, other?

Most of the homes in my neighborhood were built between 1900 and 1920. Many of them, including mine, still have gas lines running in the walls for gas lighting. Heck, a buddy's house still has connected gas lines in the walls, which means that every nail that he drives into the wall could potentially blow up his house. Fun!

No, my home was not even designed for electricity, let alone high-speed internet.
