My Cox cable internet costs $41.95 per month. I am suppose to get 9 MB/s down (with powerboost up to 12 mb/s.. whatever that means) and 768 kb/s up.

My upload speed is always higher, and my download speed usually is too (except for sundays when it is down to 7mb/s)

I just did a test at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest though... I was pulling 20.3 MB/s down and 3.3 Mb/s up. Not bad! now if only I can get that all the time.

Soooooo... how fast is your internet and what does it cost you?

DSL 1.5mbps $26 Qwest for life price, not a shared bandwidth like cable, but this is the fastest package I can get right now in the country. But, to be honest it is pretty fast and I watch streaming video's and listen to music online all the time with no problems or stuttering.

http://speedtest.net is my favorite website for testing.

I usually get close to 1.5 down and around 800 kbps up

Yeah, I have used that site before too.. I like that it provides your ping time as well.

800 kbps up is pretty good for DSL. My dad lives out in the country and his only option for high speed internet is mobile broadband or satellite.. He opted for satellite. I am not sure what his download speeds are but I know it costs like 50 or 60 bucks per month and I bet his upload and ping sucks.

He has been so used to using dial-up for years that the satellite internet is great to him.

Cool site. Looks like I get 512 down and 250 up. I pay $27 cdn (so that would be about $5 us). Its fast enough for now.

3006 down and 414 up.

Which never, ever translates to real world speed.

I'm getting ripped off here in Iowa. I pay Mediacom $65 a month, and what do I get? Most days 3mbps down and about 178 kbps up. On some rare days I'll get 6.5mbps down and 700 kbps up.

I've been waiting for Qwest or some other DSL service to come to our area. I don't understand the hold up since you can get Qwest DSL 2 streets behind ours (they put it in there almost 3 years ago now). I wouldn't get as good maximum speed, but I'd get a solid equivalent to what I mainly get with Mediacom and it would cost me about $25 less a month ($300 a year). I could use that money for more home theater stuff!

I've had Verizon FIOS since early 2006. I started with the 30Mbit down / 5Mbit up package when my company was paying for it, but I've since dropped down to the 15Mbit down / 2Mbit up plan. I pay $50/mo for it.

Lucky b@stard.

I'm on satellite at home. I forget the specs, but I think it's 1 or 1.5 M down for $69.99/mo.

Yeah, no other options here - no DSL, no cable (too far off the road).

Nick, I can't believe you can't get Qwest DSL where you live, you know where I live out in the boonies and I get their 1.5 mbps package.

I have Verizon DSL 3mb/768k service. I pay $29.99/month. I'm pretty happy with it*. It's been very reliable & I get 95%+ of the advertised speeds 24x7x365.

Before that, when I still had cable, I had a cable modem through our local cable company (Mediacom). It certainly had blazing download speeds but I used to have a lot of congestion issues during peak demand times (5-9pm). I also had to reboot the cable modem about once a week. That was many years ago though.

*I will offer one tidbit of advice to anyone having problems with Verizon DSL. Contact their support people through the "Verizon Direct" forum over on dslreports.com. This is a service where Verizon has special reps that offer one-on-one help in a forum format that bypasses the call-center drones. In short, you get help from real problem-solvers. They can make things happen. I once had a connectivity problem and couldn't get much help from the 800 number script-readers. I found that forum out of desperation. The experience there was nothing short of amazing. Questions answered, action taken, problem solved. I had Verizon Tech support calling me to make sure that the problem was solved. \:\) Through that forum, Verizon was able to deliver support about on par with what I'm used to from Axiom, which is about the highest praise I can give to a company.

Y'alls depress me.

Mine is
Download Speed: 1695 kbps (211.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 433 kbps (54.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

I think we pay something like $30/month for 1.5-3.0Mbit/384-768kbit.

I hate the Bay Area as far as connectivity goes. And it's not likely to get any better in my neighborhood.

My question is how much speed do you need? Always more, is an acceptable answer, of course. I ask because I find that most times when I get into heavy downloads, my rate is not restricted by what my provider supplies to me but by a mix of bottlenecks out along the internet path to where I'm going and the bottleneck or cpabality of the endpoint server I'm requesting the data from.

Due to these inevitable bottlenecks out in the vast world that is the Internet, very rarely, do I see speeds getting close to what my provider is actually capable of giving me. The exception is when I download something from within close logical proximity to my provider, so I have less chance of hitting third party bottlenecks.

Now bear in mind that I work for an ISP but I just wonder how much ISP speed is actually practical verses price when it seems to me that most bottlenecks can actually be occurring somewhere way past your ISP, depending on where you are going and who you are getting it from.

I say this not to defend any low bandwidth ISPs but as a caution to some people who might be paying a big premium for the fastest access possible but not necessarily getting much better results overall than someone with a slower offering. It depends on what you do and where you are going for your data.

I hope my sales dept. doesn't read this.....

I suppose if you want to do netflix more speed is better, but for casual downloading how much speed do you really need (nevermind bottlenecks)?

Yeah, I upped my internet speed (at a premium of about $12/month) for two main reasons:

so that I could get better quality streaming netflix movies on my tv with the xbox 360 and so that I can easily download/surf the net on a desktop, a laptop, and play games (ps3 or 360) all at the same time... at 3mbs down I could not do this.

So for me, the added speed is not to get a really fast connection on one device, but a decent connection on multiple devices at the same time.

Good point on multiple users.

Here is what I usually tell people. Bear in mind there are lots of other factors that can be added in but basically, I personally feel...

For someone who is just mostly using email, general browsing and occasionally sharing pictures via emails or Facebook and such...
1.5 MB is actually probably fine with 3MB preferable if you are heavier on the picture sharing.

For somebody who wants to download music or spends a lot of time on Youtube.
5MB means you can download a song or even an album without having to go take a long coffee break. Of course, it again depends much on the source. If you are using systems like Bit Torrent, it is much more likely that your final speed will be effected by bottlenecks, location, or even how many other people are sharing and downloading the same file.

For somebody who 'downloads' entire movie files. (Note: not reffering to streaming video) ....
You will never have enough speed. Even with a fast connection, you are looking at going away for a nights sleep, or a short nap at best, before you get the whole file. So more is better, but if you are going to leave it overnight anyways, does it matter all that much?

If you plan on watching streamed movies (Netflix, etc.)...
I honestly don't know much about this because we have no such service available in my area. I can tell you that the IPTV service we offer requires 7.5MB for two SD TVs, 9.5MB for three SD TVs, or 9.5 MB for one HD TV and one other SD.

There are options out there that offer 10MB and even beyond service but Honestly, even when I use my access at work that is infinitely better than 10MB, I still don't see much improvement from my 7.5MB service at home. The bottlenecks don't care how big the nozzle at the end of the pipe is.

With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

And they are evaluated only 3 stars out of 5!!
Their service must be awful considering those speeds.

We have pretty good luck with them. OTOH, they also provide our colo service and we just light the fiber between there and our office.

We've had some run ins with their service (it's not our stuff, it's your equipment! No it isn't, I've replaced every single component that I can, aside from your freakin' fiber...)

My coworker and I figure we're actually being limited on our D/L speeds by our ethernet in office (10/100) rather than our internet connection.

Up until two weeks ago I was still on dial up. Changed to ATT DSL. Paying $10 a month. My speed pales in comparison to the the numbers some of you guys are putting up. But it is a welcome change.

Hate is such a strong word. I was thinking of something less hateful like loathe or depise. \:D

The numbers you have shown are amazing for 100Mb Ethernet. That means you have really good smart switches that reduces collisions to a minimum.

Now that I'm home, I could do the test for real, just in case no one believed me. :P

Doesn't seem that the upload tested as well as I actually see in the real world, though.

Note for Comcast people: The stupid "Speedboost" only works for the first 10 - 20 MB of your download, so it is really a false indicator of speed.

Anyways, here is mine, DSL.

23 Mb/s?!??! Man, that's good. I'm on DSL now but I get Comcast Triple Play installed next Saturday.

I almost choked when the gave me the initial Triple Play Price. I called again w/ a different rep and he gave me a quote that's only $15 more than my cable bill alone. Not bad.

Maybe I will finally be able to stream Netflix in HD on my HD Tivo...

Here's my home connection. I pay for 15/2, but am considering dropping down to 10/2 so I can add FiOS TV and pay the same as I was for just phone+internet.

Here's my home:

This is through DirecTV's broadband offering, Wild Blue (as in "yonder"). That's all I have access to here: there's no DSL available via phone providers, and no cable connection in my house (too far off the street).

Check out that ping. It takes a while to beam stuff to/from the satellite, I guess.

No idea why they suggested KS as the server, although I guess it won't matter too much to the satellite. I tested a server in VA and got 1.57/0.08, 1054ms ping.

I had never checked our Internet speed since we have had fiber optics installed by our provider. Pretty impressive. I will need to run the test on one of the servers running on our 1Gb backbone.

Unless you mean kb/sec, saying it's "kinda slow" is just insulting to those of us living in the United States of AT&T.

I was just waiting for someone to call me on that. My bro has a connection similar to terzaghis with shaw cable and it runs about $40 a month. Mine is bundled with my Telus phone, its a 6 mb/s connection for $16 a month. Sorry I just had to throw the free internet joke in.

I think my internet runs about $45 per month.

Add in the cable services we have and the bill is pusihing $145 though.

I called to cancel (only bluffing) and they lowered my bill down to $108 for 6 months \:\)

I'm having problems with my cable service. My TV guide wasn't displaying randomly on one box for the last several months and some channels would display "off air" even though I had them.

They came out and pinned the problem down to the main line running to my house (from the box in the neighbor's yard). They buried a new line and I thought all was well... BUT now my internet is running sllllooooowwww.

As seen in the speed test below, my ping times more than doubled and I'm lucky to get 2mb/s down (I pay for 12-15mbs down). So much for my Call of Duty time smile.

Cox techincian is coming out tomorrow to check into the issue again.

Hopefully, they can get it all fixed soon. I already plan to dump cox for AT&T Uverse when we move if we find a house that is in their service area...

I couldn't figure out how you got the little graphic to display. When I did it, I only got this link instead.
http://www.america.myspeedtestonline.com...amp;t=speddtest

Download: 639.1 KB/sec
Upload: 70.3 KB/sec

Cost about $67 per month. AT&T DSL, with landline phone service.

And that reminds me that I have a new service (mostly needed the extra 100Gb of download for netflix). (used to be 18 up, 1 down)

Here's why I don't use Time Warner Roadrunner. A Yahoo review by me in 2009.

User Rating: 1 out of 5 stars
by Brian

I signed up for internet only. After 2 months I got a disconnect notice and a bill for $280. The main office would not help me. I canceled my service with the local office. They tried to charge me for cable tv and my own router that I'm not using, plus other services, that I did not ask for. They did not send me a bill because they switched it to online billing that I didn't ask for.

Cox came out today and verified that one of two things is causing my internet speeds to be slow:

1.) They have a usage issue (too many people tied to one main line)

2.) The main line in my area is bad.

He said they will resolve the issue as soon as possible by either adding additional capacity or replacing any damaged lines. Hopefully that won't take too terribly long!

I did find out one thing while the technician was here trouble shooting things: I no longer need the ground isolator installed (No more ep500 humming without it!) He said the isolator was introducing noise into the system. I just had a new cable line run to my house from the main box so I assume that is what stopped the hum (or the new ep500 amp I got stopped it, not sure.)

I have Cox, and pay top dollar for the Premier service.

My speed goes up and down at various times of the day, but they should be able to do much better for you.

Just to jump in here:

I have Fios internet. I pay for a 35 mb/sec upload/download. My real life results are more like 20 up, 15 down.

I pay for the triple play package which starts at $120 a month (cable boxes and HD channels are extra, so my bill for Fios, phone and internet, with every channel Fios offers = $170/mth.)

Got my internet problems resolved. Cox worked on the main line and all is well. They even gave me a $15 credit on my next bill for the trouble so no complaints here.

Yeah, especially since the service I pay for is "up to 12 mb/s down" and "750 kb/s up".

Also, the best part is that they gave me an "executive support" number that I call any time if I have problems as long as I have cox that reaches an actual person immediately: I no longer have to call the generic number and talk to a computer for 5 minutes before getting routed to where I need to be.

I will still explore the option of switching to AT&T uverse when we move (if available) but the customer service at cox has got me thinking it wouldn't be so bad to keep them after all.

Wow, looking at the chart and seeing that the Average in US is 8.8 mb/s even though many people have 30-50 mb/s down in the US. It makes me wonder what the "fast" speeds are in japan if the average is near 100 mb/s!

Well they finally ran fiber-optic cable in my neighborhood so I upgraded from DSL. Now I’m getting 38.04Mbps download and 8.21Mbps upload. And right now it’s only $29/month for the first 6 months. I think it jumps up to $60/month if I keep the fastest speed but I have the option to change to several other lower speeds if I want.

I just Started watching my first HD program on Netflix and the PQ rocks. I also can’t figure out if or how one gets multi-channel audio on instant watch though. I also had a bunch of torrents downloading some of which had ETAs of weeks. They all finished overnight.

The torrents are usually anime, music, TV shows and porn in order of quantity. OTOH there are a couple pay sites that might have a different order. wink

From what I understand the PS3 is the only NF client that supports 5.1 audio right now. Is that what you're using?

No I’m using my HTCP, which I do have set up for 7.1 audio via coax. I have an Xbox rather than a PS3 and can’t see really buying one just for Netfix right now. Not a religious thing or anything just figured other systems will eventually have to support it. Even w/o multi-channel audio the PQ improvement is still a huge plus. Not just resolution but also black levels and colour depth are better.

Well, they do finally offer a faster speed here, and of course I had to get it.

With cloud storage becoming more popular, it would be nice if I could get a higher upload speed.

Mine's still the same slow speed. I pay $40 a month for this.

First time trying pingtest.net:

Oh, and I don't know how I got 5 ms on my ping on Speedtest.net. I've gotten 14 ms every other time I've run it.

Recently upgraded my cable modem to a DOCSIS 3 model. The upgrade was free, and no change to the $55/month for the service.

Getting about 12-15 mbs down and 3-4 mb/s up at my new address. service provider is still cox communication. I could upgrade my internet if I wanted to but I'm happy with what I am getting for the money.

I called to see what kind of deal they could provide me when I moved to the new house. I wasn't happy with the price so told them I was going to switch to uverse. I spoke with someone from the "retention department" and they offered me some special deals. (I have done this off and on over the last couple of years to get a better price for my cable, whether I had intended on actually canceling or not.)

I now have the total home dvr package which is pretty cool. Same service I had at the old adresss (except the Total Home DVR) but my cost dropped to $116 per month for cable and internet (was paying about $137). The price is good for 6 months at which time I will call them back again.
I have a major advantage now that my new address has U-verse as an option. I have 3 lines on a family plan with ATT and I can bundle in Uverse pretty darn cheap. Cox will have to keep their pricing competitive if they want to keep my as a customer, and so far they have.

Also, I got them to waive about $150 worth of installation charges.

However, the techincian tried to charge me for a "pro internet installation" which consisted of plugged a coax cable from the wall into my modem that I already own. The modem was powered on and connected to my router which was already configured.

Needless to say, they wiped off the $30 charge after I told them what he actually "did"

The reason I'm on DSL right now, is because a few years ago, when I had Time Warner, Road Runner, install cable internet service (Already previously had cable TV, but cancelled it), the installer ran new cable from pole to house, then sat on couch while I did everything else. When he brought out the form for me to sign, there were some special codes, that only the company could understand scribbled on it. I signed it, then never got a bill. About 2 months later, I get a bill for something like $600. When I go to the office, they said I signed up for everything they had. I told then I did not, I just signed up for their internet service. They didn't believe me, so I canceled my service and agreed to pay for only what I said I asked for and used. But they still robbed me of about $150 over this amount. I refuse to go back there. That is the only other internet service company that's available in my area.

My life has been a poster child for the saying, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all."

Another case in point. Three months ago I got a fortune cookie that says, "Remember three months from this date. Good things are in store for you." Three months is this Thursday, October 13, 2011. I went to the dentist today, and discovered I need another root canal. The day the endodontist scheduled my root canal for is this Thursday, October 13.

They claimed to have increased our download speed to "up to 100 Mbps," but so far mid-sixties is the highest I've clocked it at Speedtest.net. I have this DOCSIS 3.0 modem, with specs that make me think it shouldn't be a bottleneck. I have a wired gigabit home network. Any ideas on what I could try?

I sure wish they'd increase upload speeds like they do download speeds. I'd be a lot more inclined to upload at least part of my music collection to my Amazon.com cloud storage if I had better upload speed.

Here's what I'm getting right now:

I'm using the "up to 12 mbps" internet right now,. which is the second out of 4 tiers they offer. I think it is around $50 per month but am getting a somewhat lower price I think as part of my cable package. I frequently get up to 20+ mbps down so never bothered with paying the extra $15 per month for the next tier.

The highest tier My ISP has is a "up to 55 mbps dl" package for $100 per month.

The best package available here in the Yukon is 25Mbps down and 1 Mbps up for 129.95 a month . How's that for being screwed.

What do you pay for that speed, bud?

I just upgraded my internet package and pay $72 + tax for up to 30 Mbps with 175 GB transfer capacity.

I canned cable this week to knock $100 off my bill and am going to go with over the air tv and streaming sites. I'm tired of paying for commercials.

I'm getting the following internet for $50.99

$36.00 with a TV, internet, & phone package discount. Total bill is mui expensivo. I keep calling the loyalty department and pleading poverty. Next step is cutting back on the services themselves.

Scott, it helps to actually be poor frown . Being old is useful and so is being with the carrier over 30 years. That's where the "loyalty" thing comes in.

Our speeds in the Peg look comparable to some ($55/mth service on MTS DSL), however Ookla uses a server test within the city. When using other speed tests that download from servers outside of the province, download speeds consistently drop to 5-6 MB/s. Upload remains the same.

Dang. I upgraded from DSL (getting 1.5, paying for 6) to Uverse (getting 3.6, paying for 3).
