Look up GoToMyPC for a commercialized version of the concept of remote desktop.

Not just commercialized -- GoToMyPC lets you access any of your computers from anywhere in the world. With Remote Desktop you need to wither be on the same network or have another way of getting into your remote networks.

I use Hamachi coupled with Ultra VNC.
Works great.
Right through routers and firewalls (after permissions).

As for Remote Desktop, it is just a set of protocols and tools used to remotely access a computer like if it was in front of you.

Since the HP Media Server does not come with a monitor or keyboard, it is normally accessible through a supplied software called "Media Server Console" running from your other computers. That console allows you to install, uninstall and configure software that is considered "part of the HP offering".

In order to install "non-officially supported software", you need to access the HP Media Server like if you were physically connected to it. The software to do that under Windows is called "Remote Desktop". (which I am currently using from an old laptop to type this post remotely on my desktop).

Thank you.

Finally!!!! The agony is over! 945 CD’s later, they’re all on a 500 gig external hard drive. I just ordered a Squeeze Box Duet and the HP MediaSmart Server EX475. I also got a 120 gig I-POD for my truck as a Christmas present.

When these new toys show up in a week or so, I’ll start messing with the music files. Before I start, does anyone have any words of wisdom for me?? This is my first go with music files…… I’m a wee bit nervous, seeing how much effort ripping all these CD’s took.

I’m not real sure what in the heck is going on, but all the music files that I ripped with EAC show up as I-tunes FLAC files in the External Drive’s explorer folder. Is this a problem?

Run, Mike! RUN!!! It's GONNA BLOW!!!!

I figured since everything else in your setup eventually catches fire, why not each of your files?

OK, seriously, I have nothing of value to offer.

That's not a problem; it's just that the computer believes iTunes owns the FLAC files. As long as they've got the right file extension, you should be fine.

You did all that work and now iTunes insists IT owns the files? This music copyright thing has gone too far!

Mike, I would throw that hard drive right into the fireplace!!!

It's not a problem. iTunes is just set as the default handler for the flac file type.
