Looking for a little advice. I have a Denon 2809 running pair of rocket 850's and bigfoot and am thinking about a pair of QS 8's for my surrounds. I need to mount them on the side walls. My problem is that I am not going to have much room between the surrounds and back wall. The room they are going into has a cathedral ceiling that opens into a kitchen with a 9' ceiling. The seating area is right where the room opens up into the kitchen. How much will the placement close to the back wall affect the sound?

Thanks

Jim

Jim...welcome

I hope your enjoying your Rockets, great speakers...

Anyway, the Q's are very forgiving on placement. Will they be mounted to the side of the couch, a little behind, or a little in front? Also, how high are you planning? They do best 2-3 ft above your ears when sitting, or even higher. Mine are about 7ft off the ground.

Also, how much space would there be from the back wall, to where your going to mount them on the side walls? You will probably be ok, as the rear tweeters would direct sound off the back wall, and give you an enveloping sound.

Are you planning on mounting any speakers on the back wall for 7.x?

Thanks for the quick response. The speakers would be slightly forward of the seating area (12"-18") and about 9'6" high. They would be about 12" - 18" from the wall. I was thinking about the adjustable wall brackets and angling the speakers down. Might be a tough sell with the wife on the back speakers. They would need to be mounted hanging from the kitchen ceiling, but you never know in the future.

Sounds like it would work great to me. I would definately angle them downward a bit at that height. Mine aren't angled at all and still sound great, but I may consider getting some different brackets some day. Axiom makes their ceiling bracket for the Q's which is adjustable, but not sure how it would work on a side wall.

Jim, from your description there doesn't appear to be any cause for concern. If you'll be using the QS8s for side surrounds in a 5.1 setup and won't be using back surrounds for 7.1, the QS8s should be on the sidewalls about 3' above ear level and maybe 2' farther back than the sitting position. The distance of side surrounds to the back wall isn't a crucial factor.

Thank for the advice. I might be able to put them a couple of feet behind the seating area and that would reduce the height a few inches as well.

Thanks again

Jim

What do you think of the flat, paintable speaker wire?

Don't quote me on this, but if I recall, when I was at Axiom in the fall, I believe they had their demo QS8s mounted on the walls.

Yeah, I know they can be mounted on walls a variety of ways, even with T bracket that comes with them... I just was not sure if the ceiling bracket could double as a wall bracket, it probably could because of the variety of adjustments built in...

Jim, you don't need to worry too much about this. I had the same concern in my small room as the QS8s are only about 5 inches from the back wall and only about 10 inches behind the seating position (about 4 feet over head). I was very surprised with how good the rear image was. Much better than the direct radiating surrounds I had before. Good luck, you can’t go wrong with the QS8s.

I too have mine mounted about 12" from the back wall and about 3 l/2' above ear level. They work well.

If you are going to be using the Banana plugs with the QS8s they don't work with the 'T' mounting bracket other wise any banana plug will work, I really like Axioms own and I also have some from Monoprice.com.

Norb, to expand on Jay's response. If your going to flush mount the Q's to a wall using the supplied "T" backet you can't use banana plugs. Other than that, Axiom speakers are no different than any other brand when it comes to using connections. I prefer bare wire connections.

My favorite banana plugs are the locking banana plugs from blue jeans cable. There is an outer collar on the banana plug that you tighten which expands the termination inside the binding post which creates a very tight, secure connection. Very nice product \:\) . The only time I use bare wire is for my QS4 surrounds which I use a t-bracket for mounting on the wall.
