Hey guys,

I'm having a problem with my 3808 when I'm using my satellite. I'm getting a black screen and it says "searching for signal" every time I change the channel, exactly like it does when I change inputs to DVD, i.e. it takes about three seconds to find the signal. The odd thing about this happening with my satellite is that I have audio, but no video for the three seconds. This is new, as it was working fine on Saturday. I just noticed it yesterday, when I was also having a problem with the GUI not showing up on the screen, so I had to do a reset (recommended by Denon) and it fixed that problem, but I still have this problem. Denon figures that it's some sort of handshake issue and the 3808 is at fault and I should send it in to get it serviced which I'm not enthusiastic about.

So, long story short, do you guys have any ideas at all about what the problem could be and how I can fix it?

Thanks.

Is it possible that someone could have bumped something and a HDMI or other cable is loose somewhere? If you haven't already get someone to ensure that all the cables are connected properly.

It happens. When i returned from my travels Monday night, my PS3 wasn't sending audio or video. This usually means that my wife switched the HDMI cable over to my Toshiba player to watch a movie because she finds it easier to use. No problem, except oddly, there was an extra wire stuck in the back of the Toshiba. Looks like in her first try she took the USB connected to charge the PS3 controller and stuck it into the RJ45 jack of the DVD player. Had to laugh. I wouldn't have guessed that it would fit, but it did.

Mine does the same thing. Always has from day one. We have cable instead of satellite. It takes about 3 to 4 seconds for the picture to come in when changing channels or inputs. Always get the sound a second or two first.

I just assumed it was normal for the 3808.

A friend of mine had the same issue and ending up changing his connection from the cable box to receiver to component. The problem went away. I assume handshake issues. He is fine because he only needs 1080i input.

I found out what the problem is, it's my cable box (Starchoice). I was talking to a friend about this and he sent me this link where lots of people are having the same issue, or similar ones because of the last firmware upgrade.

Starchoice implemented HDCP in the last firmware upgrade which limits what you can record (copyrighted material etc.)and apparently connecting to an AVR. When I spoke to them today and told them my problem they said the only way around it is to connect the satellite receiver directly to the television via component, or I could go DVI /HDMI to my receiver, but it looks like other people are having problems with it hooked up this way also.

I'll try running component directly to my TV tomorrow and see if that makes a difference. This is a huge hassle, and many people are ticked off to say the least.

I would tell them that you want to run it through your avr and see if they have any other models that don't suck.

It is not going to work right no matter to what device you have it attached. If they are re-handshaking with every channel change, it's going to be slow. HDCP was not designed to work that way, it takes long enough to set up that it should be done once when the devices power on. It's almost bearable to do it on resolution change (like bonus content on a Blu-ray) which happens occasionally, but still that annoys me.

It's defective by design. Hopefully enough people will complain that they'll turn it back off, or change the way it is implemented.
