ok so i prob have a stupid question but im a stupid guy.

i have a sherwood rx-770 with a pair of m60s. they are quite new to me and i am loving them. so when i have nothing playing there is a slight white noise that comes out of the speakers. this noise goes away when i turn off the receiver but is there no matter what input i select. its not a hum but static noise. my question is what is the white noise, and can i get it to go away. i usually listen to mp3s and records and the speaker wires are monster. i dont rememeber if this has bean going on since i fist hooked up the speakers and amp, but i just noticed it a couple of days ago.

any news can help. thank you.

Can you hear it from your sitting position, or only close to the speaker? Does the level vary with the volume setting? How far up do you usually leave your volume? Did you change any settings in the receiver to attempt to adjust for your new speakers?

If it is just a quiet hiss that can only be heard when you are close to the speaker, chances are it is just the noise-floor of the receiver (it doesn't get any quieter that that). You may have just never noticed it before because you weren't listening for anything new.

If it is loud, and really did just start, recheck all your connections. Maybe you bumped something when connecting up the new speakers.

My old Sony was the same way, a nearly inaudible hiss which was always present. Coincidentally enough, my new receiver, a Pioneer, is silent when not playing anything (except on the MCACC setup screen, there it produces a very loud hiss which I can hear from my seat, odd).

I bet it is just the amp in the receiver... my denon does the same thing.

That's a pretty inexpensive receiver. I'm guessing it's just the noise floor.
