This topic came up recently and I believe the consensus was that running your connections through your receuiver makes more sense. One benefit is that your receiver will perform al the necessary switching for you so you don't have to choose a different input on the TV when changing sourced. Sushi (a member here) mentioned that he could detect no degradation in quality by running his video through the receiver, either.

The only reason NOT to do this is that you need to buy more cables.

Frank, ditto Peter, and in addition note that since your 1400 will upconvert S-video to a component cable output, only one additional set of component cables to the TV would be necessary.

If you don't run the signal through your receiver - thus facilitating source switching - you will be the only one who knows how to operate your system. Between the VCR, cable box, TV, and DVD player (with their accompanying remotes) my wife has no clue. She just learned how to turn on the TV again and is quite proud of herself (who said a BA in sociology is worthless?).

Oh god, it's hellish to have to swap wires and things. And try to instruct others in how to do it... Just make sure the remote is decent and clear. I don't know if I'll ever live down my statement about getting an A/V receiver: "It'll make it easier!" She now takes every opportunity to tell everyone that she has to use 2 remotes to watch the Tivo now.

You guys let your wives TOUCH the remote?

I run straight to the TV but my TV (Sony RPTV) has discrete input codes so programming my remote is easy. Macros baby, Macros! You can get discrete codes at the Remote Central forum for many tvs. Even unpublished discrete codes.

Anyone who has more than 1 remote for their entertainment center has to get with the times!

Some of us don't have the extra cash to drop on a $200 universal remote. The H/K remotes suck as universals, so, yup, I've got 6 remotes.

Personally, I'm getting kind of sick of the "me-macho-man I don't let my lowly wife have anything to do with my audio choices she'd better just shut up and deal with it" attitude of some people around here. Even if it's just joking, I still think it's just a little immature and disrespectful. Yeah, I'll bitch about WAF and all that, but come on, people!
