I can't seem to find the setting that will allow me to listen to cd's or ipod in stereo + subwoofer (2.1) mode. The default stereo setting is only 2.0

For now, I am listening to music in "neural" or "5-channel stereo" mode in order to get the subwoofer effects. Any help?

Thanks in advance.

normally if you select Stereo or Direct mode the sub will be active. Stereo mode will follow your crossover settings and speaker size setup in the receiver, direct mode bypasses bass management so the speakers also get the full range with no crossover being used. In either case your sub should be getting a signal. How is the sub hooked up to the receiver?

My EP500 is plugged into the sub pre-out (the only place I can plug it into). I know it's plugged into the right place because there's no mistaking that the sub works when I watch movies.

Even if my front speakers are set to "large", I should still get a signal to the sub? right?

If you are using the "large" setting make sure the sub is set to LFE+ Mains in your Denons setup menu. That should solve your problem.

Ak, if you're using the M22s with an EP500, they should definitely be set "small" with the crossover probably at 80Hz. If you set them "large"(playing full-range, including all the bass), the sub will usually get nothing when playing CDs, since it would only be sent LFE occasionally present in movies, and of course there is no LFE in CDs. Using a "plus" type of setting, as mentioned by Dr. Horse, adds bass from "large" speakers to the sub, but there's no good reason to use that combination in your situation.

Your Denon may be like my 2807 where the subwoofer preference for 2 channel music is in a different part of the menu from the regular speaker setup. I think mine calls it “Advanced Playback” > “2ch Direct/Stereo” here you chose if you want to use the subwoofer for 2 channel playback. You may have more than one option like “Basic” and “Custom. Main thing is you want to set the subwoofer to “yes” and probably your mains to “small,” but you should also be able to use LFE+Mains if you want the bass to go to both the mains and the subwoofer.

Again if your Denon is like mine this will enable the subwoofer in all 2 channel modes including “Direct” and “Pure Direct.” The only way to remove the subwoofer from 2 channel playback will be to go back to the “Advanced Playback” and set subwoofer to “no.”
