Here is an article on Intel's upcoming announcment of production of LCoS display chips that could see 50" HDTV displays for sale for $1000 by next Christmas. You will have to register with the New York Times(free) to be able to read it. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/17/technology/17chip.html?th.

Just let me know when the display quality becomes acceptable. I've never actually seen the things, but I'd really like a (relatively) thin screen. Everyone keeps saying that the tech's not there yet.

LCoS has (in all the reviews I've read) been leaps and bounds better than LCD, plasma, and even DLP. The problem has been with QC and price. Let's hope Intel's new chips can help that.

Yup. And if the 50" ones are $1000, then the 37" ones should be around $500-700 (hopefully).

We're talking about compact light weight rear projection tv's here. The reviews I read on the new Philips LCoS sets were excellent. I saw one last week and it didn't quite live up to my expectations in comparison to the newest Samsung DLP (HLN467W)set which was excellent. You never know how well adjusted the sets are that displayed in most of the stores, often not very well. The 46" Samy set had a great picture compared to everything else in the store with only a 1/2" bezel around the screen and picture disappeared behind the bezel. It weighs about 70 lbs. and is 16" deep. The only problem was the price: $3800. Add an HDTV tuner and drop the price to $1000 I'd jump. It looks like that's where we'll be in the next two years. Even then I think the quality improvements will be steady for the next five years or so. I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money today knowing in a year or so knowing better sets will be 1/3 or less today's prices.

I'm definately holding out. I almost "settled" and was looking at purchasing a 57" +/- CRT RPTV in the $1500-2000 range. But as you all know, they're HUGE. Hopefully that same money will get me a bigger screen, and smaller set. I also don't like buying a "HD" tv that can't display 1920x1080. HD is 1920x1080. It almost seems criminal that the makers are allowed to call things HD that aren't.

OK...it's settled. I'm holding out for 60+ inches of 1920x1080 resolution. (and I want to pay no more than $2500) What are your predictions? How long before that's a reality. I'm guessing 2 years.

one of the problems with waiting on advances, is that when that display has come to your price point, your other gear may be outdated too. then you'll be looking for another cd player?? or maybe another avr. it's like computers, cutting edge today, and yesterday's news tomorrow.

yeah....and in 2 or 3 years you will want what costs $3500 instead of what you can get for $2500.

spiff...you know it is an endless cycle!

I just got a new rack/stand that is waiting for a new TV next year!
