Well, I've been playing around with the frequency sweep of 14 hz to 22k hz through all channels that is on the Digital Video Essentials disk and an SPL meter mounted on a tripod. I set it so that pink noise registers 75db, then I would run the sweep multiple times.

I start to pick up audible sound somewhere between 20-22 hz, hard to tell, moves too fast. Starts at about 40db and quickly moves up to about 55db. Then mid to upper bass around 50db, then jumps to around 60-70 db and tops out at 80db when the frequency gets to around 5k-10k then slowly drops to inaudibility at around 16k.

FYI, your spl meter won't be particularly accurate beyond about 2 KHz.

First time I heard that one. I thought it would just measure SPL regardless of what the frequency it was.

It has to do with the internal components of the mic. To get accuracy above 2khz you need to upgrade to something like the Behringer ECM 8000 with an external mic preamp. The ECM is supposed to be very flat up to about 10KHz.

For accuracy above 10KHz and below 20Hz you need to spend quite a bit more $.

Upon checking the Behringer ECM 8000 goes from 15k to 20k, would probably need something that goes from 2k to 15k, but would also need some way to meter it.

So, checking frequence response with an SPL meter is somewhat of a waste of time then?

Some options (some cheap, some free)
1) http://www.rivesaudio.com/software/TestCD.html
2) http://www.binkster.net/extras.shtml#cd
3) http://www.aixrecords.com/catalog/sampler3.html
4) http://www.demo-world.eu/demo-dvds/ (not sure if they have test tones)
3) Avia or DVE from NetFlix.

SPL meter is difficult to use for sub calibration though.

Well the frequency sweep I had from HSU is no longer on their site but you can try these... I haven't tried either but Realtraps has been used by lots of people around here.

or

Realtraps

Alternatively shoot me a pm and I can burn you a disk of my HSU files.

I have a disc of tones that I created/generated... I don't think I went below 20hZ though. I'd have to find it, but could send a copy.
