I know my tastes in movies are a little off......
but I really liked this movie. Visually beautiful and a good story without being too Walt Disney( a little hoaky here and there. But edgy here and there too. I will be buying this blu ray for the goergeous artistry. I am watching it a second ti,e now and I have the feeling this film will have long legs. I think I will enjoy something about it every time I see it. (Coraline is another movie like this for me.)

I too enjoyed the movie and will be purchasing the blu-raay along with Avatar very soon; both for their visual effects.

Interesting, I mentioned this to my wife, who is a teacher. She said she has heard lots of negative feedback from the other teachers about this movie. I guess I will have to see it to form an opinion.

I can understand why people might not like it. One reason may be because it is the story from the second book. Not the story that many people might be expecting.

It is a most see for HT lovers though. There are a few scenes with the mad hatter in front of an orange background complimenting his make up and costume that is some of the best blu ray that I have seen.

No, you must form an opinion first and base it off the negative reviews so you can fit in with all the other AVS forum wannabe's ;\)

We should base our opinions on whether or not the stars bathe regularly.

I must say the colors are nice but the film imho is poop. My wife loved it I just don't get it. It was long and boring. But please understand I love lots of movies other people think are poop. I love Willow everyone thinks that movie is poop, except me. I also love gone fishing with Danny Glover and Leo Getts AKA Joe Pesci. I know for a fact Gone Fishing sucks, but I still love it.

I also think district 9 sucked major poop, the whole world thinks its Oscar worthy. I think its poop

Lol! Griff, I loved "Gone Fishing" too, and I watched District 9 the other day...not sure what the fuss was all about...not a bad movie, but certainly not Oscarworthy. Average imo.

Randy, are they grade school teachers? I could see it getting negative feedback because the target audience is children but it's content isn't appropriate for them IMO.

I felt the same way about D9, was much more excited about it from previews then after I actually saw it. I feel great about Book of Eli, I hope it doesn't dissapoint me the same.

I did not like D9 either. I may have even nodded off during that one at the theater.

I enjoyed the Book of Eli, despite being another friggin doomsday movie. I won't be a spoiler but will say that something is revealed in the end (that I never once considered) that made the rest of the movie excellent.

I loved D9. I felt it was the little movie that could. It turned out to be completely different than I thought but in a good way (for me).

If you don't like the story or the acting in Alice than I suggest playing a different soundtrack while watching it. I am going to start the rumor right here that "Fellowship of the Ring" meshes perfectly with it.

D9 lost me at the very beginning. Why would human hookers sleep with giant shrimp? Why would giant shrimp sleep with human hookers? And how would they pay? How did every human understand every shrimp?

Oh and who in the hell nominated D9 for a damn Oscar? I thought that movie was majorly 'middle of the road' material. Nothing ground breaking, no new concepts... pretty much just your standard 'aliens arrive on earth, get treated like shit, military want's them dead, but they prevail anyway' type movie.

It should be pretty much obvious to everyone by now the way Hollywood portrays aliens. If in the beginning of the movie the aliens attack earth, then you can expect by the end of the movie we shall annihilate them. But if in the beginning of the movie the aliens come to earth peacefully (or by accident as is the case 50% of the time), then throughout most of the movie our military (which will be completely riddled with the biggest assholes this planet has ever seen) will try their damndest to annihilate the visitors, but will ultimately fail because the aliens are just too darn cute.

If there has been an alien movie made that didn't follow one of these two formula's, I haven't seen it.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

For those of you who haven't seen D9, it falls into catagory 'B'.

While I agree that District 9 wasn't the greatest movie, I don't really see it falling into the category you're saying it does. But yeah, the story's not the greatest, and I'm not a fan of the overall tone. I still wish the director had had the opportunity to make the Halo movie.

Actually, most alien movies are more along the lines of:

Big evil aliens try to take over/eat/destroy humanity. Hero with big guns comes in blazing and saves the day. Humanity triumphs.

D9 is good solid scifi. I thought that the movie was an accurate portrayal of the politics of crisis.

“Men in Black” where we help (officially at least) the aliens who came here, but your point about how the stories usually run is well taken.

I agree that D9 was way overrated in getting an Oscar nomination. Which IMO it only received because it was an anti-apartheid movie in a quasi science fiction wrapper.

The thing that turned me off the most about D9 was the pseudo-documentary style. That makes it impossible for me to suspend disbelief and get involved in the story. I’d have rather watched a History Channel documentary on Apartheid since I would at least have come out of that more knowledgeable.

If you haven't seen Idiocracy, I highly recommend watching it. It's a very humorous and accurate portrayal of society in the future.

Idiocracy was OK, but kind of annoying. Maybe that's the point. Anyway, it's a great concept that didn't make a great movie. It would have been better as a skit on an SNL-type show.

Mike Judge still hasn't topped Office Space, one of the great cult classics. I had hoped Extract would live up to that standard, but it was very ho-hum, like Idiocracy. Seems to me that he has been in decline for a while. Guess that happens when your first movie is so awesome. I call it the M. Night Shyamalan Syndrome.

I also thought that District 9 was pretty good, but not Best Picture good. I think grunt is on the money with his politics at the Oscars theory.

Just watched District 9. I can't really say that I enjoyed it per se; but I've never seen anything quite like it. I thought the story was fascinating, and I'm really hoping they don't make a sequel. Nice to see some real (if not hard) sci-fi on in a movie for once.

A few quibbles--dear lord, that was gory, and really, people, Steadicam was invented for a reason. I'm looking at you, Battlestar Galactica.

That was my reaction. I don't think we were meant to enjoy it exactly. The movie takes some of the less savory ways we treat each other and applied it to aliens to very good effect.

Have you watched Moon? That's another good sci-fi movie.
