Right. New topic. My old propane BBQ has reached the point of no return and I have to replace it. Aside from all the problems due to its age, it was too small to keep up with growing appetites. So I have questions. I've never had a side burner. What uses are they put to, and do you use yours? I have a Coleman rotisserie which mounts into 3 holes on one side, and a groove on the other. Which companies (aside from Coleman) will allow me to mount it? What should I be looking for in terms of features and BTUs? I do a lot of cooking on it of all types (meat, veggies, fish) and I have to feed a family of four and small groups of friends throughout the year. Ideas?
P.S. usual budget constrictions apply. My BBQ fund was just swallowed up by a new water heater

Not sure if the point here is to respond to the digressions or start new ones, so let me do the latter:

Jean de Florette. I just watched this, unbelievably, for the first time last night and it's a great movie. We're watching its follow-up, Manon of the Spring, tonight. (For those familiar with the first, you HAVE to see the second almost as soon as #1 ends.)

Anyway, in addition to this being an outstanding movie, it also has a great, musical soundtrack, for those interested in this aspect. Nothing that will make the walls rumble -- this is more along the lines of beautiful music (after Verdi) that fits the story.

Safin???

That dude self destructs more than anybody in the world. I was trainging in Florida once and had to play next to him and this dude was the biggest nut job ever. How he has made it this far with his mental ability is beyond me.

Besides that, Federer is sick. Aggassi, this could be his last go around. How can you be that dude when you are that old?

How can you leave Roddick off that list. He is the single best thing to happen to tennis in America in 10-15 years. He is only going to get better. And I would put my money on him to win it all in Melbourne. that was pretty cheesy eh?

Ahem. This thread reminds me of an Allman Brothers jam from 30 years ago - "everybody go do your own thing and meet me back here in 20 minutes".

The title of the thread also reminded me of Zappa's classic "Return of the Son of Shut Up n Play Yer Guitar"

Gas Grills! I adore a magazine called "Cook's Illustrated". It is expensive, because it has no advertising - kind of like Consumer Reports for kitchen gadgets and recipes. There is an associated PBS show called "America's Test Kitchen" and books by founding editor Christopher Kimball. They did a big ol' test (as they are wont to do) and settled on the Weber Genesis line of grills.

I recently paid the plumber (eeeuuwww) to run some natural gas to my kitchen and ... patio. So I was in the market for a NG grill. I have heretofore been devoted to charcoal. I got a good deal on a Weber Genesis Gold B (about $100 off at $469 at a local store).

I am very pleased so far. The people at Weber seem to really know how to design outdoor cooking appliances. And I'm finding new ways to impart the wood flavors I value.

One of the problems with this kind of thing is that many grills simply do not get hot enough. I have no complaints; the full-on gas from the new grill is just as hot as my usual pile of charcoal (no small feat). Fat steaks are 6 minutes a side to medium, and nicely charred.

Anyway, if you use it that much, don't scrimp.

I personally had no interest in the side burner thing. The chances of me getting ALL the cooking done outside are virtually zero.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled digression.

Beer. Pike Kilt Lifter Scottish. Yum yum yum yum yum.

I'm usually more into it, but I almost forgot it was even that time of year. I just haven't been paying much attention to tennis yet this year. Maybe I'm still just disappointed that I got rained out for the USOpen a couple of months ago. At least it give me a built in anniversary trip for this year since we have rain check tickets coming to us.

we used to be a warranty outlet for sunbeam and coleman when they were one. the coleman rotiss i believe only fits coleman, and sold for about $75.00. we couldn't keep them in stock. if you need coleman parts, you need to go to them now. if i was to purchase another grill, look at a plain and simple MHP brand. supposed to have lifetime every thing. as for side burners, they're only usefull to keep things warm, not boiling corn or lobsters. let me know your location, and i'll see if i have a buddy in our trade who may stock a King's Cooker. to see one, go to: www.massappliance.com, and click thru our static pages; there's one illustrated.

Safin has been working on his mental game quite a bit. Did you see him at Hopman? He was looking pretty good. If he controls his temper, he's as good as anybody. Though I admit, he is a head case, and hasn't played much recently. Do looks count for anything?

I left Andy off the list, because I'm all Andy'd out. He's like the #1 song of the week. You can't get away from him. Besides, I don't really care for his game all that much. I'm not saying he doesn't have what it takes to win. He certainly does. I just prefer watching other people play.

You can't count Agassi out. He had an incredible year last year. He was #1 in the world again last April. He won the Aussie Open last year, and he made it to the year end ATP Masters final! Old or not...the man can play.

That leaves Federer. What can I say about him. Is there anything he can't do? He's just amazing.

My wife wants me to stop buying beer and wine until we can put a dent in the liquor cabinet. It's completely full. Since I love beer and wine, I'm going to have to start drinking cocktails a lot more now so that I can drink wine a beer without pressure later.

My first plan of attack is to take out the 1/4-or-less-full bottles. There's a nice rum (Sea Wynde), for example, that I could probably kill in a couple gulps or so...

Well, Peter, if you need a hand with that, I'll come help out for free. Heck, you pick up the travel and lodging expense, and I'll even change a diaper or two.

Next thing, she's going to want you to start actually USING some of those tools in the garage before you buy more. Slippery slope, my friend.

If by garage, you mean top shelf of the linen closet in my bathroom, then your comment might be accurate.

She knows I'm a handy guy and has no problem with me buying tools when I need them. Just last week she told me the best thing I ever did for her (half-jokingly, I hope!) was replacing the faucet in the bathroom. For that job, I needed to buy a basin wrench.

So the secret to having all the tools I want is first devising projects that need them.

So I had my first ski day of the season yesterday at Northstar in Tahoe. Snow was packed powder. Weather was sunny. No wind. I skiied like a maniac. I was on a roll and it seemed like I could do no wrong -- until I hit some nasty moguls on one particular black diamond. Everyone needs a little reality check now and then.

The only difference between this time and the previous season is that I'm in much better shape now. Makes a HUGE difference. (duh)

You can't give up on snowboarding. The first few days will be painful, but after 3 or 4 days of going out there and trying you will pick it up pretty quick! I was in Aspen 2 weeks ago for a while, and it was sick! They got 4 feet the day before I got there, so the snow was awesome, and the weather was untouchable, 35 degrees and BlueBird each day. Can't ask for more than that, except for the fresh cut pipe, new rails, and monster tables they had.

I love Roddicks game by the way. He has in my opinion one of the sickest serves ever. it might not be the prettiest game out there, but it is consistent and he knowcks the ever living crap out of the ball. I played him in juniors the year before he won the Orange Bowl, and I was in awe of how hard he hit every single ball. He has incredible amounts of talent, but he also has an incredible work ethic, which makes him that much better in my opinion. and he is super cool and very down to earth.

Its also hard to learn to board on the bunny slope. It is better to learn on a green or blue. You need more of a slope for your edges to dig in and then you just lean into the toe side or heel side to turn left or right. getoffb is correct and it takes 3-4 times to get the hang of it.
The 1st day experience for most is no different than running into a brick wall. Give it another run or two.

If you play with knives, you should expect to get cut. (don't worry, it's not gory)

My favorite part of the video is a tossup between:
A) the cameraman -- was he asleep???
-- or --
B) the guy who comes on after the incident.

A perfect example of why i do not buy anything at those home shopping networks.
I believe that salesman was trying to show how tough those blades were was he not?
Oh the irony.

I once saw a home network sale for a ladder. Easy to fold up item. The guy climbed up the ladder on the set and pretended to dust something then started to climb back down and wiped out.

That one made Business 2.0s list of the 101 dumbest moments in business of the last year.

But boy, was that sword thing funny. I think the cameraman was cutting away from any possible gore to have a close up of the blade. Ya know, it's pretty, so people will ignore the talking and buy the swords!

What gets me is they didn't cut the audio from his mike. Was the producer asleep or something? Also, didn't they have any medical people (or anyone!!) available to come help the dude? The other host just stands there!

WOW! Is Federer a tennis God or what? He played so smart and very cunning by mixing up the backhand with slices and "over the ball" drives a la Agassi except better.

Safin and Agassi and Rodick were no slouches either. They all brought thier "A" games to this tournament. Safin seems to be very focused and seems to have really matured and just may be out of his "self destruct" phase. This level of play and talent makes me really look forward to the coming year in tennis.

Agassi seemed really down in the post match interview after the loss to Safin. I hope he doesn't retire. This was by far some of the greatest tennis I've ever seen in a major.

It was also some of the worst line calling I've ever seen in a major. I couldn't beleive how many bad calls there were with no help from the chair umpires. None the less, this was a classic tournament.

It was indeed a great tournament. Federer is amazing. He can play so many different games, and knew exactly how to play Safin.

It's great to see Safin back though, isn't it?

OK, so who else saw the "surprise guest" during the Superbowl half-time show? (The preceding link may be NSFW, but it was on national TV, so it must be safe, right? )

CBS and MTV (they produced the halftime show) are officially apologizing, but rumor has it that the stunt was preapproved.

That whole half time show was in bad taste with all the mock humping going on, so the "breast flop" wasn't any worse nor was it surprising. I'm no prude and I appreciate a bare breast as much as the next guy but I'm sure a lot of kids were watching and that's not cool. Maybe they (CBS) will let Hooters produce the half time show next year. I bet MTV won't be.

That game was so good I thought I was watching the CFL

Canadians are used to breast shots (and more) on tv so I don't think it had the same shock factor for us. I just think the whole MTV experience is a little out of place for the halftime show. Then again who wants Barry Manalo.

I'm a big believer in "there's a time and a place." Like mwc, I appreciate a bare breast as much as the next guy. This just wasn't the time and the place. Even many of the commercials were in bad taste. Funny as it was, I was embarrassed by the horse blowing up the woman. Not because of the subject, but because of the when and where.

I'm really surprised that this whole bare breast thing has people is such an uproar. Jesus...it was a breast! Deal with it.

How can that cause this kind of uproar when something truly shocking is on EVERY week, and doesn't cause any controversey?

Is it really that bad for a child to see a breast? How on earth is that going to harm him/her?

I'd have to agree with Craig here (it was pretty tacky, but hardly offensive)....maybe this deserves a poll!

I agree with you. I simply posted it to start discussion.

HOWEVER, I do think it's up to parents to decide what material is appropriate for their children to watch. IMHO, the entire half-time show was something I wouldn't let a young child see.

True enough, I don't think I'd want my children subjected to Justin Timberlake, nudity or not!

That was very popular nationally broadcast show with many children watching. It's not appropriate for the same reason women don't walk around in church without a top on (yes, extreme example).

It is not on public television every week. The last time I watched pokemon they didn't flash boobs at me. The last cartoon did nothing of the sort. Can you imagine them showing nudity in Disney films?

If I had a kid, I wouldn't want you or anyone else saying what was bad for it. I would make decisions about that myself. I don't want MTV & CBS (maybe approved by the NFL league itself) to cause stunts like this to raise raitings. Of course they planned this whole ordeal. I think they're responding to the "look at girls in bikinis half time show." They want their raitings back in that segment.

I hated most all of the show. I thought the music was out dated. Also, the singing was terrible. But, to show a breast on national television with everyone watching during a prime time was just wrong. Plain and simple.

There is a reason they usually show nudity or whatever late at night. Also, often there are built in restrictions on TVs to prevent viewing these channels. I bet you'd have a hard time finding nudity on TV at three in the afternoon (without a dedicated porn channel). This is for a good reason. If parents want to show their kids American Pie, they can do that. But, don't subject all the kids watching to all that. (What do you say to your 9 year old boy when his friends are all around watching when he asks you about that? What would they say to each other?) Anyway, I am kind of going off in too many different directions. This could be considered a little bit of a charged topic. No offense to anyone!

What are you "subjecting" them to? A breast. I'm sure all the innocent children watching the ballgame last night are going to have to go to therapy now for the rest of their lives.

What would I say if they asked about it? First off, I'm not sure what they'd ask, since there's not much to say, but if they did, I'd simply tell them that women have much larger breasts then men. Pretty straight forward stuff. I think it's far more damaging to a child to "protect" them for something as harmless as a breast. For gosh sakes, he/she was probably feeding from a breast as an infant.

Just everyone calm down for a second and let the initial rush of outrage subside, and then think rationally for a moment. What is the danger of a child seeing a bare breast. What do you really think is going to go wrong with that child if he/she sees a breast?

Blame it on the child, but I'm willing to bet the issue is really that you're simply embarrassed about it (due to your parents bringing you up that a bare breast is a terrible thing).

We're all brought up that nudity is a horrible, horrible thing. So, we believe it. (Seriously, how much of what your parents/culture has taught you have you ever really questioned?) It's not. Women have breasts. Deal with it.

If you want to get riled up, get riled up over violence on tv. Not bare breasts. (Note I didn't say "sex", because a bare breast isn't "sex".)

wow...sorry about that. Glad this is in the "off topic" forum.

I'd much rather have my child see a breast than some of the un-edited war footage that CNN was so proudly showing a few months ago.

Having said that, it is a very personal thing. Different people react different ways. Debates over this sort of thing will have use all acting like boobs.

spiff,

I don't think anyone here is outraged. I don't think a little kid would have even given the breast a second thought because they're not attuned to look for such things (like many grown men are ).

The point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter whether there's damage to the child or not. I fall on the more relaxed side of the fence when it comes to what my kid will be allowed to see at certain ages, but I still think it's a parents right and duty to decide what's appropriate. CBS took that right and stomped all over it.

The fact that more and more of these kinds of "age-appropriacy" (like that word Chess?) decisions are being left to corporations is a partial explanation for the state of adolescence today.

I think this soapbox is about to collapse, so I'm steppin' down now.

It's not just a breast. It's much more than that. I believe TV networks are relaxing. They're allowing more of this to slip in to mainstream television. Things are changing over time, worse in my opinion. I don't see any reason why she had to have her top taken off. What's the point of showing her breast? Why did she have to do that?

I think I have a fairly good take on this whole situation. Being 23 I am not too far removed from the whole age issue. I wanted to watch R rated movies (They're rated based on what? Nudity?! Go figure!). Shoot, just yesterday the girl carded me because I purchased Open Range at Walmart (she thought I wasn't 18). She checked my license in the computer and everything.

I have nothing against showing kids a breast. But, I am strongly in favor of keeping that decision in the hands of the parent involved. Just because you believe it's alright, doesn't mean my kid (if I had one) would have to be involved with it. I get riled up on many things. I think a reason there is so much violence is people want good entertainment, and that's what they find interesting. I think the news is largely negaive to gain better ratings, which isn't good but what can you do? You're feeding people what keeps them watching the tv closer.

Notice how you can't cuss on the Radio? (Except you can on Satalite Radio, go figure. That doesn't make much sense to me). You don't hear cuss words on this message board, nudity in pictures, etc.?

It comes down to decency in my opinion.

I'm all for leaving it up to the parents. In that respect, yes, showing it on a broadcast television station was wrong.

My big issue is with the amount of uproar this has caused, when images of violence are viewed by people young and old every day on television, and that seems "OK" with everyone. Just seems like peoples priorities on what's important to protect their children from really needs to be looked at.

One last thing, and I'm done. Promise.

If it turns out that CBS knew about this "stunt", and allowed it to go on, I'll be boycotting CBS from here forward. This is the same station that refused to show a policital ad during the 1/2 time show, because it didn't fit in with their political agenda. They used the excuse that it was too controversial. If you've seen the ad, it's one of the most vanilla political ads I've ever seen.

OK...I'm done. Next 'OFF TOPIC' subject...

Have you seen european television? They have been doing that stuff for decades. North American attitudes has been quite conservative compared to Europeans. I applaud LA, San Fran, NY, Montreal to take it up a notch. Its just human nature anyways.

Speaking of European TV, their commercials are full of flesh. Here's one that's very tastefully and humorously done. (WARNING!! LINK CONTAINS BOOBS!)

We had been casually dating for awhile, but kind of decided that we were "officially" a couple on 2/5.

err...that was supposed to read "We'll even be able to go to Massachusetts very soon!"

Our dictator will be trying to get an ammendment to the constitution, but I really doubt it'll pass. There's already numerous Republicans who oppose that idea.

Wow...this thread has been bringing out all the political crap in me. Sorry again. Politics really don't belong much on these boards.

I certainly feel bad about Janet Jackson. Not so much for the Super Bowl mess, but what happened to her afterwards...did you hear? She was driving home after the show and was pulled over by a policeman who gave her a ticket. Seems she was driving with one of her "headlights" out....:)

Here's why this whole 'nipple-gate' thing is ridiculous - because people are already filing class-action suits against the various parties involved. One woman filing a suit claims it caused irrepairable injury to her. You'd think she hadn't seen her own breasts before.

I laughed this morning on the local radion show, the guy said the only injury he sustained was reaching for the TiVo remote to pause it!

Dunno...I just didn't dig it. There was one or two tracks that weren't bad, but the majority of the disc didn't float my boat. I'd heard a couple of live tracks that prompted me to order the CD. The CD just didn't live up to the two live tracks I'd heard. (mp3's)
