Would an alternative solution be getting a Blu Ray Player with built in decoders so you don't need to send the audio over an HDMI cable?

Oppo's 83SE http://oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-83SE/ has the same class of DAC, of which I linked to the kit earlier, for its stereo out. It plays just about everything.

Does the Onkyo A-5VL Digital Amp help?

I know John, I'm not acting logical. The AVR is the logical choice.

That little Onkyo is pretty cute Tom. Definitely something to look at further.

Chris, I'm thinking about moving my BD83 to this system and picking up an 80 for the HT. I really just need a BR transport for either set up seeing how I have a Lumagen XS for the HT and I'll get an Edge for this one. I haven't looked into the two new Oppo's much, as I've been very happy with the 83.

Ya Dakkon, their pretty damn proud of that thing, but it's quite cool.....

Is anyone familiar with the process of routing an AVR stereo (R/L) pre-outs to a preamp? I read where this is possible in a thread at AVS, but the preamp needs to have a bypass function. There is a list of amps and preamps that have this function here. http://www.audiophile.no/articles-in-eng...processor-input

Is it necessary to have this bypass function or can I just run the AVR R/L pre-outs to one of the 1070’s R/L inputs?

Why do you want to keep the 1070 in there if you get another AVR? You also have the 1080 power amp, right?

It makes no sense to have two receivers together. But if that's what you want to do, then you'll need to set, and not touch the volume on the first receiver with the digital input. Where you set the volume is another thing. You're looking for the unity gain point (which doesn't technically apply to digital inputs). That's were the line-outs are delivering at max, the max input voltage the 1070 expects to see for max output.

It's a messy hack. Not many receivers have line-outs, only the higher end ones. Those will more than likely meet or exceed the performance of the 1070 itself. Or you could go with a straight pre-pro instead of a receiver. All of those will also be of the level of performance you're getting from the 1070.

Mike, I'm surprised your HDMI outputting stuff doesn't have optical outs. Surely there are thousands of little DACs that convert optical to stereo out.

Chris – It wouldn’t be two receivers, but one receiver with HDMI A/V processing into a pre/pro with an HT bypass function (or my 1070, if possible, without the bypass function). This way I could plug all the HDMI and digital stuff into the receiver and use its pre-outs as a common input to the pre/pro and keep my CD player going directly into the 1070. I'm not really set on anything at this point, just looking at all my options. As I initially indicated, I had no intention of ever having a display in this room and it was to be a strictly two channel rig, without video.

Ken - They do, but those little outboard DAC's are pretty expensive, $400 and up, and the ones that have remote switching are about $1000 and up. And, they all appear to be limited to three inputs or less. All the ones I've looked at so far have one optical, one coax and one balanced.

I'm actually thinking my best bet is to just buy a multi channel pre/pro with HDMI switching and get rid of the 1070. There are a few available (used or new) that are in very low demand now that everyone is moving to HDMI pre/pro's with video and audio processing, verses just switching. There are a few that are on the market for less than a third of the cost as when they were first released. I was looking at an Adcom that was $6000 new just one year ago and up for sale for $1500.

I think it really just boils down to the fact that I'm attached to the 1070 and don't want to get rid of it. It has an odd sentimental value to me that I can't quite figure out.

I know I'm being very silly over all this.... The smart thing to do would be as John and others have mentioned and just buy a friggin Onkyo (or other inexpensive) AVR and be done with it. Or even smarter yet, stick to my orginal plan and keep the damn TV out of this room.
