I was born in Santa Paula and lived in Bakersfield till I was 6, barely remember much about it other than we lived across from a school and I broke my arm falling off the monkey bars there.

No hospitals. Doctors came to you and bled you into a bowl until you felt better. If you were smart, you felt better quickly.

So, Jack's birth goes back FARTHER than the middle ages, Rick?

I know where that is, funny thing is I had never been to Kern County or even heard of Tehachapi until we moved here 8 years ago from the OC.

Living in the OC, you didn't need to know about it. You had just about everything you needed. My wife's parents live in Dana Point. If you want rolling hills, that's what Mammoth and Yosemite are for.

Don't know how long you've been there, but if you haven't seen the wild flowers in spring in the Tehachapi area, you are missing an awesome sight. Many a postcard have been printed of those hills.

Ya know? Some of you guys oughta remember that I'm going to be within a few inches of you in a couple of weeks. You may remember Teddy Roosevelt's philosophy of walk softly but carry a big stick. Well, he actually got that from me. He was about 5 when he overheard me say it.

How can you walk softly when your joints creak so loudly, though? grin

Nice story. We should all be so lucky as to "having a lot of friends" and die in our sleep after a big bowl of ice cream.
