Well I finally ordered and received a Onkyo 3008 last week. With 9.2 a possiblity and height / wide options I ordered 2 more M22s in/on's for wides and 2 more QS8s for heights.

I currently have M22 in/on's for fronts, W150/W100 for center, QS8s for sides and QS8s for rears.

Currently the 3008 only does wides or fronts plus 7.2, but there is a rumored firmware update (reliable source) that the heights/wides can be used at the same time.

So for now I'm keeping the rear QS8s because you can quickly switch between heights or wides + 7'2 with a button on the remote for comparison.

Based on some of Grunt's posts a while back I went with QS8s for heights. Already ordered 1 1/2 weeks ago(but not shipped).

Now I'm second guessing myself because Audyssey recommends direct radiators for heights. So M22/M2 or QS8s for heights?

Any thoughts?

Hi Jeff,

Audyssey recommends direct radiators for all positions so you had better second guess your surrounds and rears then also. This is because their EQ system is better at calculating a curve for a direct radiating speaker because it’s much simpler to model than the variety of di/bi pole configurations available.

Recently another member, HuskerOmaha, got this response from Chris at Audyssey when he asked about using direct radiators or bipole speakers for heights:

Bottom line is that if you prefer QS8 style speakers for the surround and rear positions over direct radiators then I’m 99.9% sure you will also prefer them for height speakers since height speakers project only ambient and not direct sound effects.

In other words buy the best speaker for the job and then apply EQ. Don’t buy an EQ system and then seek to match your speakers to it.

Thanks I made the rright decision then. Just wanted to get "backup"

I'm anxious to hear the heights and wides... from what I read you don't notice a big diff with the heights when you first hook them up... but then if you turn them off you can't live without them ("the wall of sound")

Wides, I don't really have the proper room width for them but it should be some improvement... we shall see! hear!

Spent the last months on the HTPC, servers and extenders.

Build a new Sandy Bridge 2600K 12gb SSD HTPC, moved all the media to the HTPC off the server (i know, long story),

so now I have a HTPC with 21TB of movie storage, 4TB Recorded TV storage, 3TB of recorded tv movies storage and 1TB for music and photos.

"I know ... who could listen/watch all that! It's the journey not the destination"

So with that behind me ... it's time to concentrate on audio expansion, audio calibration, then video calibration. Then maybe some movie watchin' & music listenin'

Then I'll get to the real work, remodel the media room and finish the AV rack.

My little 3 month HTPC/AV rack project has turned into a 2 year monster... that I've (for the most part) totally enjoyed.

29TB?!?!

You're insane.

How many drives do you have on the Sandy Bridge machine? Do you know about the disk corruption that's occurring with the 3 Gb SATA interfaces? Only the first two, 6 Gb SATA ports can be used without data loss being likely.

Edit: More specifically, boards featuring Intel's P67 and H67 chipsets.

That's all Sandy Bridges at this point. There ain't no other chipsets...

Intel is once again allowing machines to be released with the defective chips, but only two SATA ports enabled.
