Best Picture Oscar NominationsHere is a spreadsheet I've been working on for my personal use. I thought I'd see if there was anyway to share it here. So far, it seems to be working. It has the latest nominations at the top and goes all the way back to 1928 at the bottom. I've also been working on the Price to buy these from Amazon.com, which over time will change. The X under colum B just represents whether or not I own it, which would be meaningless for you. Sometime back, USA skipped a year and they now call 2010 Oscars the 2011 Oscars. I've retained the old method so not to have a gap in the years.

Going back to 10 nominees seems so pointless. There's barely 5 movies "worthy" of a Best Picture nod, let alone 10.
That chart really shows how well Harvey Weinstein was at basically bribing Academy members in the mid to late 90's. A lot of Miramax on the list, most not particularly deserving.

Agreed. Some years I don't think there's any that qualify.

Americans are mondo suckers for British accents and period costumes-------lots and lots of costumes, period. Like Baywatch. It's the costumes.

Thanks for the list. It has inspired me to want to figure out how to automatically populate a worksheet with current Amazon pricing using macros and AWS. One day I'll actually figure that out and it'll be a good project.

I gave up on that stupid award when Cuba Gooding Jr won for show me the money. Ed Norton was amazing that year in Primal Fear.
I felt better when Rene Zellweger won for Cold Mountain.

I just looked at the list. Saw lots of movies that I really liked. The only movie that I saw that I really hated was "Prince of Tides"
Thank you for making the list. I got a lot of enjoyment at seeing movie titles I had not thought of in years and it was a very easy to look at (not busy) list.

People at work are telling me I'm wasting my money buying movies when I could be streaming them on-line.
I thought the quality wasn't quite there yet. Another problem I have is I'm using AT&T DSL with their highest speed, and in the evenings if I try streaming videos (haven't tried Netflix yet), it stops longer than it plays in jerky motions.
Perhaps I should buy some more cat5 wire and splice into it where it comes into the house and string another line over to my blu-ray player.

People at work are telling me You shouldn't ever trust people at work. You don't need them. You have us. And if you're like 1/2 the people here, you're spending more time with us while you're at work than you are with "them" anyway.

I have AT&T 3.0 MBit service (translated, my speed is a leeeetle bit over 1.5MBit) and my Netflix video quality is generally pretty good. In SD, AFAIK, unless I'm getting HD on the laptop now. Audio's not great.

My internet speed numbers run between 4500-5500 download, a little over 600 upload. Not sure how this translates to MBit.

Perhaps I should buy some more cat5 wire and splice into it where it comes into the house and string another line over to my blu-ray player. My understanding is that they still are not able to transmit in 5.1 regardless of DSL or Cable? That is half the reason that I have Axioms in the first place - the home theater experience. So...I still rent or purchase.

If they are movies I enjoy, I like to purchase them because I'll watch them more than once. Of course, the flipside of that is occasionally you buy a real stinker despite some positive reviews, and you feel like you got gyped.

One problem that I can see of ordering these older movies from Amazon.com, especially the cheaper priced ones without any description, is you don't know what aspect ratio you're getting. 4:3 9:6, etc. I would imagine that a lot of the older ones are the 4:3 variety on DVD. Definitely 4:3 on VHS. I think 9:6 is the same as what's called anamorphic.

My internet speed numbers run between 4500-5500 download, a little over 600 upload. Not sure how this translates to MBit. The numbers you are quoting are in kbps. So just divide by 1000 to get mbps. Looks like your download is fast enough for HD video streaming.

If you click on the google apps spreadsheet link in the first message on page 1, you'll see that I started to add a movie description field. This field trails off to the right a long way. I didn't want to make it scroll multiple lines, because this would make the rows too high. What I wish is the ability to have a column for description and a button in each cell. If you click on the button, a window opens up displaying the description that is recorded in that cell. They have gadgets that you can add on a per cell basis, but none that will do this function. You can write your own gadget, but I haven't seen any info on how to do this yet.

Sorry but 1000 is correct. This is not a memory size spec but a frequency measurement using the decimal system and not powers of two.

That's debatable... I believe the 1000x prefixes are only used for hard drive size, not network speeds.

That's debatable... I believe the 1000x prefixes are only used for hard drive size, not network speeds. - In data communications, a kilobit is a thousand (103) bits. It's commonly used for measuring the amount of data that is transferred in a second between two telecommunication points. Kilobits per second is usually shortened to Kbps.* Some sources define a kilobit to mean 1,024 (that is, 210) bits. Although the bit is a unit of the binary number system, bits in data communications are discrete signal pulses and have historically been counted using the decimal number system. For example, 28.8 kilobits per second (Kbps) is 28,800 bits per second. Because of computer architecture and memory address boundaries, bytes are always some multiple or exponent of two. See kilobyte, etc. Note: In international English outside the U.S., the equivalent usage is "kbps" or "kbits s-1."

GREAT JOB! on the spreadsheet. Though really unimportant, I found an error you might want to correct. 1933's Little Women starred Kathrine Hepburn, Joan Bennet, Paul Lucas, and Edna May Oliver. I'm pretty sure Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, & Kirsten Dunst were not alive in 1933.
