Believe it or not, this works.

http://ufinsect.ifas.ufl.edu/deerfly_trap.htm

I have adapted it to mount on my mower. The key is making sure that the trap is higher than your head when you are seated. I sometimes just drive around and watch the little @#$% land on it. It gives me great pleasure.

I think Adrian would look quite sporty wearing the hat/trap apparatus while cycling through the woods.

I don't have a hat. I made something similar to the ones on the sideview mirrors. I mounted it on a pole and have a little box for the pole to sit in. I have to take it out when I go under a tree. It is not unusual to end up with 70-100 deerflies stuck to the trap after a 2 hour mowing session.

I wonder if a patch of doublesided carpet tape on the back of my hat would look too "tacky".

You're already riding a lawn mower. I wouldn't worry about your appearance.
