i just read here: http://www.axiomaudio.com/research_PowerTestRoom.html
that the M80s have been tested for 100 hours with heavy metal music, at 700 Watts continuous input power, with peaks of 1000 Watts!

this is very impressive, but it brings a question:
if this speaker is good for 700 Watts cont. input power, why then do you rate the speakers at 400 Watts, and not at 700 Watts ?

So people don't lose their hearing?

Better to under promise and over deliver?

That is a solid business strategy.

In my line of work, I sometimes see companies with new medications do the opposite. To get my attention, the drug rep will make some very impressive claims. Guess what happens then? If/when I find out that the medication is not doing what it was supposed to do, then my impression of it (and the drug rep) goes in the toilet. Example: Strattera was supposed to be just as good as the stimulants (Ritalin, Adderall, etc) for ADHD. It wasn't. It's pretty weak. Can I really trust the Eli Lilly rep any more?

The savvy companies try the under-promise and over-deliver strategy.

Isn't that ultimately determined by what they bring you for lunch?

My *guess* with the OPs question is that just because they test it out at that high a power, that doesn't mean they recommend that power for all-day, everyday use.

A Hyundai might be tested at 110MPH, but that doesn't mean it's really recommended.

Well, Doc, my job is sorta making sure that our store sets and replenishment are delivered complete and on time with no problems. Well nigh impossible to achieve - but I live by that rule. Problem is my boss tends to over promise - so it keeps the stress level up - not that I am lobbying for any free samples or anything......

I would suspect there to be many reasons why they are not marketed for 700W, first reason that comes to mind is that far too many people actually believe that those specs mean something and would pass over buying them thinking they would need 700W to make the M80s work at their best, when in fact they work equally as well with much, much less.

From an engineering stand point most everyday items are spec'd at much less than what they have been engineered to with stand for liability reasons.

Axiom needs to sell the special 700w version for only $4,999.95.

I wonder what amps were used for those M80 power handling tests before the A1400 class D series was developed?

I'm sure they could ship you the stickers for your M80's since you have the secret decoder ring.

I seem to remember someone mentioning Mcintosh amps but Brystons would make more sense.

David Hafler made the iconic Dynaco amplifiers. These tube amps in kit or built introduced a generation to audiophile sound quality at a reasonable price. Modified Dynacos are still world class.
