in the same line of thoughts, yesterday was a special concert given by the MSO in their new concert hall in Montreal;
it was broadcast on TV, in Dolby Digital 5.1 by the french CBC.

they were playing Beethoven's 9th.

i watched it for about 5 mins and then went somewhere else because they were using the usual compressor, where when someone yells, it is not louder than when people are having a normal conversation.

for me, compression takes out most of the quality and enjoyment of music, specially classical.

luckily for some people, sometimes they broadcast live the sound on their FM station, where they never use compression; but i haven't listened to FM for a good many years: 99.9% pop music.

i have many times written to some TV and FM stations to take their compressors out of line when they broadcast music, but it would take lots of letters for them to even start considering the idea.
